Truly, he was beginning to sound quite condescending, so I didn't bother looking back as I replied, "I won't, sir. I'll be heading down now to collaborate with the project team to ensure that everything is in place and ready for tonight."

He didn't respond, so I made sure to roll my eyes as I took my leave.

Chapter 7

Lucien

Iwatched her leave and couldn’t quite understand my recent tolerance and reaction to her and her blunders. Usually, I wouldn’t have even bothered to chastise her for this because she rarely made mistakes, and I knew that whenever she did, she immediately corrected herself. But today, it was as though I was purposefully mad at her because I couldn’t figure out the sudden changes in her.

Now that she had explained her breakup, a few more things explained themselves; however, it still didn’t change the fact that her body seemed to have changed overnight.

Sighing, I shook my head to brush all of these nonsense considerations off, especially as I checked the time and saw that it was quickly ticking away. More importantly, I needed to meet with our CFO once again to make more preparations for tonight.

This occupied my time for the next several hours until seven approached, and all preparations were complete. I put on my suit jacket and couldn’t help but feel slightly nervous. It had been a long time since I had felt this much excitement with projects, but Charles’ business was a multimillion-dollar beast that, on its own, was sure to beat out the performance of thelast two quarters. I had been trying to get him to hand over his business for the past two years while he'd been hinting at and trying to get me to meet his daughter and go to dinner with her.

More than offensive, it was a bit amusing to me that his hope that a relationship could somewhat form between us was the key to getting his business but I had absolutely no complaints.

I arrived early to once again go through the slides, but then at the final minute, Sophie hurried in. She came over to me, and the first thing I noticed was the smell of her perfume. It was different from usual, and it made me stop for a moment to stare at her curiously. She was slightly taken aback by my sudden reaction, but as our eyes met, I didn't exactly care to explain. She smells good enough for me to notice, and once again, it struck my curiosity at the sudden changes in her.

I couldn't help but notice the slight peek of her cleavage through the sheer blouse, and against my will, it affected me. Perhaps it was my slight nervousness at the upcoming meeting, but regardless, all was welcome.

“What is it?” I asked to kickstart her brain.

“I just got a call from Charles,” she began, and the moment I heard the name, all of those feelings immediately dissipated. Annoyance and immense irritation took their place because I already knew exactly what she was going to say.

“He cancelled?” I asked, and she shook her head.

“Um... not really, he just said that something came up, and he had to be in London immediately. He said he’d be back soon for his daughter's birthday celebration so he'll be available then.”

I was pissed off, but given the multitude of staff present, I tried my best to contain my expression and countenance.

“When is his daughter’s birthday?” I asked, however, she seemed startled.

I cocked my head, wondering why she wasn’t aware of this. “You don’t know?” I asked, and she straightened, then looked around at all the eyes in the room currently on her.

For a moment, I watched her almost become self-conscious and cower, which was the norm, but then she straightened and stared at me defiantly.

“I don't but I'll find out now.”

I turned to her in surprise. “You arranged a date for us a few months ago to meet that I refused to attend. You didn't have the information stored somewhere.”

And just like that, she seemed lost again, but she quickly recovered.

“A lot of dates to take note of. It's been a tough few months.”

At her words, there was slight laughter across the room, but I wasn't amused. Still, I glanced curiously at her once again, but there were more urgent things to worry about, so I brushed it off.

I got up then without a word, and she came with me.

“Should I arrange your car home?” she asked and I stopped to frown at her.

“Why the hell would I go home? You heard him; he has to be in London and he never stays long there. Soon enough, he’ll be in Russia, and this meeting will take another two years to hold. We’re going to London right now. Make the preparations and ensure we’re ready to leave in an hour.”

With this, I turned around and went on my way.
