“Yes, you’re right,” I said and turned to look at her.

“He definitely doesn’t have a girlfriend, but you know how men are. He could have other people he’s seeing on the side.”

“So nothing serious then?” she asked, and I smiled and nodded.

“Definitely, nothing serious.”

She smiled even more broadly then and continued to fix her hair.

I watched her quietly and the more I did the more sad I felt. I really couldn’t help it.

“I feel like you didn’t even really want to see me tonight,” I said sadly, “after so many years apart I was hoping we could catch up.”

At my words, she stopped as she contemplated my words and then she gave me an apologetic look. “I’ve been coming off that way, haven’t I?” she said.

I simply smiled at her but the answer was unquestionable.

“I’m really sorry,” she said. “It’s been my only night out in months, and if you’re around the women I hang out with at the programs, you’d understand. Being a single mom has been the absolute worst, and I’ve been in survival mode. They talk about going to places and bars like this to meet financially well-off men, and if it’s not someone they can date, it might be someone they can exchange some sort of companionship for toget some financial compensation. I’ve been considering doing it for a while but I’ve been too afraid to ask any of them to come with me, but you... I guess I’ve always felt incredibly close and comfortable with you, so I thought this would be a great opportunity."

I completely understood her then and nodded. "You’re right, it is a great opportunity. Alright, I’ll help you out. You can speak to both men, but I think you might have a better chance with Greg. From what I know of my boss, he really doesn’t chase women frequently despite his wealth. He’s the kind that’s mainly focused on his work. As you can see, he’s not even out now for social purposes; he’s here because of business. Before this, he was fast asleep in the hotel."

"Oh, alright," she said.

"Plus, Gregory lives here in London, while Lucien is in New York. He might want someone close in proximity."

"I don’t care," she said. "I'm more than ready to leave that dump, Luton. The crime rate is absolutely out of hand. I completely hate it there."

I understood her so I nodded and continued with fixing my hair and makeup.

I excused myself and entered the stall. I'd come in here with a purpose after all. I had been excited to engage in whatever play Lucien wanted, but after my conversation with Nancy, I didn't think I was up for it any longer. Still, I did as he had asked.

He had his eyes on me after we returned to our seats, and even Nancy herself began to notice. It was uncomfortable because, of course, he was expecting a response, and yet I was acting both deaf, blind, and dumb.

My phone lit up several times, yet I pretended to ignore it until eventually, he got fed up, and it was just as our food arrived.

“Sophie, come with me,” he said and rose to his feet. Before I could inquire why this was necessary, he was already strolling majestically away. I looked at Nancy, who gave me a concerned look. She leaned over to whisper into my ear.

“Was I coming on too strong? Was I bothering him?”

I shook my head to assure her, and then I got up and followed.

Chapter 25

Lucien

Ididn’t understand the game she was playing, and it sure as hell wasn’t interesting to me in any way.

I went straight to the bar and waited by it, and soon enough, she arrived with a slight smile on her face. My eyebrows furrowed, as I realized that she truly wasn’t as hassle-free and naive as I had always imagined.

“What are you doing?” I asked as she tucked her hair behind her ear and folded her arms across her chest. Her posture was defensive, and I wondered what exactly she was being so defensive about.

“Nothing, sir,” she replied as politely as she could, but I wasn’t buying it.

“Is all of this one-sided?” I asked.

However, she didn’t respond.

“Answer me,” I said, and she opened her lips to speak, but no words came out. She glanced behind at our table to see those two watching us and then she sighed.
