"Oh no," I wrinkled my nose. "You have to work late a lot?"

"Usually, but the bonuses are insane, plus lately I've been glad to be anywhere but home," I stared at her and couldn't help but feel saddened by her words.

"We've really not been as close as we should be? I should know this?"

"We talk a lot, just not about these things, plus I didn't exactly want to tell you about Jerald either."

"You're right," I nodded, "It's all your fault."

She smiled, and just then the phone began to ring again.

"Speaker," she said. "Try it out."

I nodded and responded.

"Sophie, where's the shares division proposal?" came the cold, quiet voice.

For a moment, I was a bit startled as I listened to him because I had expected a boisterous tone. However, he sounded so calm like the undulating surface of the ocean.

"Hello?" he called again.

I turned to look at Sophie, who was thinking.

Eventually, she figured it out and raised her hand. "It's on my desktop," she whispered.

"Sophie!" he called again, and though his tone wasn't loud, I could still feel the annoyance in his tone.

"Oh, sorry," I replied.

Sophie mouthed the next set of instructions to me. "Sorry, sir."

"What?" I mouthed back.

"Sir," she whispered fiercely, and my frown deepened even further.

"Sophie?" he reminded again, and she nudged me.

"Sorry, sir, it's on my desktop."

He went silent briefly. "You didn't print it out? You said you'd leave the documents on my desk."

I watched the worry flash across Sophie's face. Then she began to nod, and my attention focused on her lips. "I did, sir, but I think I left that one out."

Once again, he went silent.

I expected him to hang up then or scold her and get someone else to do what he wanted, but he dished out new instructions over the phone.

"I need those documents now," he said.

I frowned again before I could tell him to figure it out himself, but in more colorful words, Sophie nodded vigorously at me while whispering, "I'm almost there, sir."

I was forced to repeat the words, and afterwards, I set the cell phone down.

"You're almost there?"

"I'm his assistant," she told me. "He has others, but I'm the only one with complete access to him. Others are restricted in one way or another, and I'm the only one with a hefty salary and additional bonuses."

I still wasn't convinced, however, she wasn't interested in trying to convince me. "I want to build a long-term career there; you don't, so—"
