“No, I didn't know she had a twin sister. You saw them together?”

“This morning, sir,” he replied. “She came in early from the old house I told you was in Chelsea. I mentioned to you earlier the last time that she went to the old house at first, and then came to this new one, and I didn't understand what the discrepancy was. So, I had someone keep an eye on her, and he finally reported to me that they were twins.”

“Wait,” I was immediately alarmed.

Truly, I was so stunned I didn’t even know what to say. But most importantly, it was as though a million pieces that I couldn't quite understand where to place began to suddenly slot themselves into place in my head, and at the end of it, my eyes were open so wide that they nearly popped out of my sockets. There was a lot of explanation needed, but before all of that, there was one thing I had to confirm.

“The girl… the twin in Sophie's old house. What's the color of her hair and what length is it?”

"Sir," he said, and I shut my eyes because I already knew what he was going to say before he did.

"The girl in the original house is Sophie."

"And the one with the dark hair?"

"That's her twin sister," he replied, and something hurt and fiery began to burn in the pit of my stomach. I didn’t know exactly what I felt or how to process this. At the end of the day, all I could do was instruct him to immediately head over to the office with the full details of his report.

Less than an hour later, he was seated before me with the folder in his hands as he narrated the details. However, I wasn’t quite ready to open it up just yet. I wasn’t even properly listening to him because my mind was in a dark place. One clear emotionthat I could identify was anger, but at the same time, I was somewhat amused because I should have known. And then, a part of me as well was relieved because it meant that I hadn’t been blind all of these years. From the very beginning, or more accurately, as I now knew from the beginning of this week, my attraction to her had been instant, and it was something that I had been unable to make sense of. But now that this thread had been revealed, everything felt connected, and I preferred this state of complete knowledge to be in the dark like I had been.

Finally, there was a part of me that knew it would be difficult to forgive her because I felt fooled. However, I couldn’t understand why, and more than anything, I needed to know. And most importantly, how long had they been planning on continuing with this charade? Surely this hadn’t just been something they had orchestrated for fun, right? I mean, there had to have been a purpose, and if there was, why had Scarlett, as I now knew her name to be, suddenly stopped coming today? Finally, as I pondered on this, I realized that I finally had a question I wanted to ask Felix, and so I lifted my gaze to his.

"Do you know why she stopped coming to work today?" I asked.

He opened his file then and began to flip through, but in the end, he as well didn’t have an answer.

"We just discovered all of this this morning, so I have one of my men on it and building the details. But all that we have right now is what I’ve told you."

"Hm," I replied, nodding.

We both remained silent after this as I thought of what to do. Keeping quiet and acting like I didn’t know anything seemed to be the best course of action. However, I knew that I would be too anxious to wait. My entire body, mind, and spirit were restless, and I knew that what I needed, beyond all else, was answers. And I knew just who to get them from.

"Call off your men from finding out more details," I told Felix, and he lifted his gaze at me, somewhat surprised.

"You don’t want us to find the answers to the questions you have?" he asked, noting the glint of curiosity in his eyes.

"I do, but there’s no need to search secretly when I can just ask Sophie."

His expression turned skeptical, and I knew exactly the reason for this.

"I know," I said. "You expect her to lie to me, but I don’t think she will. There has to be an explanation for this entire charade, and I want to hear what she has to say."

He considered this for a few minutes and then offered an alternate suggestion. "Why don’t I continue with my search, sir? As discreetly as possible, of course. This way, you’ll have my report to use in corroborating whatever answers she gives to you."

I considered this, and eventually, I couldn’t find a reason to reject it, so I nodded.

"How soon can you get back to me?"

"Within twenty-four hours, sir," he replied, and I agreed.

"Afterward," I told him. "You’ll pay a visit to Sophie for me. And tell her that I want to meet with her."

"Certainly," he replied, and our plans were set in motion.

Chapter 51

Scarlett

By the time I woke up, the apartment had turned from daylight to nighttime. It was so dark that I wondered if there was any point in me even getting out of bed. However, when I realized it was just eight pm and I was starving, I eventually got out of bed and pushed my hair out of my eyes.
