Keep him safe, she prayed. Please keep him safe.

The men both startled and turned to face him. They exchanged a wary glance and their hands went to their right hips. She didn’t see guns, but their cargo-style shorts could easily hide a gun or a knife.

Brylee’s heart raced, and for the first time this week it had little to do with how attractive Cash was, or almost falling off the waterfall. What if they hurt him? No way could she stay hidden and let them kill him. Why had she stupidly promised not to come out of her hiding spot?

She grasped the tree branch and leaned a bit closer, not wanting to miss anything. The phone buzzed on her hip, but she ignored it.

“Y’all lost?” Cash asked easily, not looking concerned or afraid. He stopped a few feet from them, folding his arms across his chest like he often did.

“Just out exploring,” the blond man said, smiling. His smile was not friendly, more disturbing. “Danny Roper. This is my friend Adam Paulson.”

“Cash Trapper.” Cash lifted a hand but didn’t move forward to shake either of their hands.

“Where’s the woman?” Adam, the darker guy, asked.

Danny shot him a warning look.

“Woman?” Cash appeared nonplussed. His face gave nothing away.

“There are women’s clothes in the pile, or are you camping here alone?”

“I’m alone,” Cash said evenly.

“Interesting.” Danny obviously didn’t believe him. “How’d you get here? No boat. What’s with all the cameras?”

“Helicopter. The cameras are to record your faces so you can be prosecuted for trespassing.”

Danny and Adam exchanged a look.

Cash’s posture tightened. “You were looking through my stuff. I overheard something about me hiding something.” He stared them down, and Brylee could see how he could be crazily intimidating. “Who are you really? Who told you to come here, and what are you after?”

“We overheard talk in a bar on St. Lucia about a million dollars being hidden on this deserted island,” Adam said.

“Really?” Cash asked.

“Really.” Danny pulled a gun out of his pocket and aimed it at Cash.

Brylee gasped. She put a hand over her mouth and prayed like she’d never prayed in her life. What if he shot Cash? Her hip was buzzing again. Should she text Shawn and tell him theyneeded help really fast? Probably. She pulled the phone out but couldn’t look away from the drama unfolding before her.

“And we know it’s just you and that beautiful, innocent, hot redhead here on the island,” Danny continued. “We heard all about her. You tell us where the money is and we won’t kill you and have fun with your girl before we kill her.”

“First of all, you’re a moron,” Cash said. “These cameras are transmitting, and authorities are already on their way.”

Brylee thought he was lying about the cameras transmitting, and she thought him using ‘moron’ like she and Natasha had was awesome. She forced herself to open the text app. She didn’t respond to the texts from Shawn but typed out,Bad guys with guns. Help!

“Danny?” Adam’s voice trembled. “I don’t want to go back to prison.”

“Shut up,” Danny said. “I’ll kill him, we’ll find the woman and the money, and we’ll clear out before anybody gets here.”

Brylee clung to the phone with sweaty fingers. It was vibrating in her hands. Obviously Shawn wanted her to answer, but she couldn’t. She’d promised Cash not to give her position away, and she couldn’t look away from that awful gun in Danny’s hand, pointed right at Cash. She wanted to scream she loved him, distract the men, and dive in front of him so if anybody died it would be her.

“Second of all …” Cash grinned. What was he grinning about? “I’m a Green Beret. We aren’t easy to kill.”

He dove to the side, behind a boulder.

Danny pulled the trigger. The bullet ricocheted off the rock.

Cash yanked his gun out, aimed, and shot Danny in the arm. The man yelped but held on to his gun.
