Cash’s body tightened. It was Danny. No way. How had he escaped and gotten to them through the storm?

Worse than that … Cash had left the pistol and one of the knives up by the waterfall. His only focus had been Brylee in his arms and her distress over his news.

He’d protect Brylee somehow. The pressure of her against his back strengthened him.

Please help me protect her, Lord.

He would fight to the death for her, but with no weapons on him, one very determined criminal—and he could bet Danny had brought somebody more experienced and tougher than Adam this time—he might be dying a lot sooner than he thought.

As long as Brylee was safe and whole, he wouldn’t mind dying before the miserable cancer took him.

There was only one thing he’d mind. Not seeing her again.

Chapter

Nineteen

Brylee pressedinto Cash’s back as tremors of fear ran through her. His muscles tightened against her. He was strong and brilliant and trained, but there were two men out there with guns and she was terrified one of them was Danny. He couldn’t have gotten free. Could he?

Cash had left his weapons up by the waterfall pool. Where was the satellite phone? Probably still in his backpack. By the camp chairs. They’d been so worn out they hadn’t even unloaded the supplies. Or the money, which was also in his backpack.

“Get out here,” Danny commanded. “Hands up. I brought better help this time. He likes gorgeous redheads too.”

The other man chuckled darkly at that.

“They won’t touch you,” Cash gritted out.

“Don’t make promises you can’t keep,” Danny snarled. “Now get out here.”

Cash turned and took her hand, whispering in her ear before he straightened out of the tent, “At my signal, drop to the ground, get away, and call for help.”

How was she supposed to call for help without the phone? There was no time to respond as they both straightened andfaced Danny and a large, swarthy man. Brylee could see well enough with the sliver of moon that they were both terrifying and holding their pistols steadily on Cash.

“Hello, beautiful,” Danny purred at her.

“Don’t,” Cash warned in a cold voice that made Danny focus on him.

“Unarmed, are you, friend?”

“I left my pistol up by the waterfall,” Cash admitted. Brylee had no idea why he’d told him that. “I was too focused on Brylee.” His hand was clasped tightly around hers. Was that how he’d signal? She had no idea. How was she supposed to get to the phone and call for help? She could imagine he was going to try to distract them, but they’d probably shoot him.

“I’ll bet.” Danny looked her over, and she feared he’d say something disgusting.

“You will deal with me and me alone,” Cash said.

Danny’s gaze snapped back to Cash. “We have the weapons, and my friend Truman here is a crack shot, an undefeated ultimate fighter, and he wants his half a million dollars.”

“How did you get out of prison?” Cash asked.

“If I told you that, you’d know too much.”

“You’ve come for the money,” Cash said evenly. “I’ll get it for you and you can get out of here before the authorities come, or before I find an opening to kill you.”

Danny’s eyes widened.

Truman laughed, but it sounded uneasy. “He’s unarmed.”

“Don’t let down your guard,” Danny commanded him. “He was a Green Beret captain. Get my money,” he said to Cash. “Then I’ll decide if I kill you, but either way I’m taking the girl.”
