Brylee felt a bit of hope. He wouldn’t shoot Cash again if he thought he owed him.

“I’ll thank him by giving him a swift death.”

“No!” Brylee had absolutely no clue how to fight, how to protect Cash. Was he still awake? He’d said her name, but nothing since.

He might already be dead or die soon from three gunshot wounds and the loss of blood. He might die in six months from the cancer. But right now, she would protect him. No way would she let this monster shoot him again.

She turned over onto her knees, still blocking Cash, and said, “He’s going to die anyway. Let’s take the money and you and I can get out of here.” She tried to look like she actually wanted to go with him when inside her stomach was rolling and she was afraid she would vomit.

“You’ll go willingly with me?”

“You’ve got the money. You’ve proven how tough you are.” She winked at him. Her mouth tasted foul.

He eased closer. She was relieved to see him loosen his grip on the gun.

Brylee arched up onto her knees as he reached out a hand to her. Then she angled past his hand and slugged him in his man parts as hard as she’d ever hit anyone in her life. Unlike the shooting lessons, her brothers hadn’t quit until she knew how to throw an effective punch.

Danny squealed and rocked forward, dropping to his knees.

“Brylee!” Cash commanded from behind her.

She dodged to the side as Cash rolled up, ripped the gun from Danny’s hand, turned it on the man, and shot him in the head.

Danny’s head jerked backward, pulling his torso back, then his whole body fell unceremoniously backward and hit the dirt. Not moving.

Brylee panted for air.

Cash slumped back onto his back. The gun slipped from his fingers.

“Cash!” she screamed. “Cash!”

Pressing her fingers against his neck, she felt a pulse. He was alive. But …

She had to focus. Had to help him.

Please, heaven above. What do I do?

Terror rolled through her, staring at Cash—helpless, bloody, dying.

No. He couldn’t die.

He absolutely could and would die. Right now, if she didn’t do something.

She feared her terror was stronger than her faith. Then suddenly it hit her. Pressure on the wounds to stop the bleeding.

Brylee rustled through the supplies for clean towels. She wrapped and tucked one around the wound on his arm and did the same on his leg. Then she gently pressed a towel against the wound on his abdomen. It seemed to be the worst one. Would he survive?

She glanced over at the men. They weren’t moving. That was the only good news of today.

“Cash.”

He didn’t respond.

Leaning down, she felt his soft exhalations against her cheek.

Oh, Cash. At least he was breathing.

She held the cloth against his wound and prayed. She prayed like she’d never prayed before. He didn’t want her to stay by him while he died from cancer. But what if he died tonight?
