She rolls her eyes, a smirk playing at the corners of her lips. “And what if I had pepper-sprayed you instead?”

I chuckle, appreciating her feistiness. “Well, I’d probably be nursing my pride and a stinging face right now.”

The girl’s annoyance gives way to a slight grin as the corner of her pursed lips curls inevitably upward. “That would serve you right.”

I shrug, unable to resist the playful banter.

The tension between us begins to dissipate, replaced by a shared sense of amusement. I lean against the alley wall, a casual grin on my face. “So, do you often find yourself in situations like these?”

She quirks an eyebrow, her tone dry. “You mean getting into fights with strangers in alleyways? Not exactly my favorite pastime.”

I laugh at her response, finding her sense of humor refreshing. “Fair enough. But you do seem like someone who can handle herself just fine.”

Her lips twitch again with a hint of a smile, and she shrugs casually. “I’ve had my share of unexpected encounters. Comes with the territory.”

I raise an eyebrow, intrigued. “What’s the territory?”

Rachel hesitates for a moment, her gaze distant. “Let’s just say I’ve learned to be cautious.”

I nod in understanding, not wanting to press her further. “Well, it’s a good thing you’re cautious. You never know when someone might come charging to the rescue.”

“Okay hero, where can I send the bill in case Bobby decides to sue?”

“Bobby?”

“The guy you just punched,” the side of her mouth lifts.

I lean against the alley wall, considering her question with a playful glint in my eye. “Well, here is my number.” I take one of my business cards that only have my phone number and my address written on it, and I offer it to her. To my surprise, she actually takes it.

“But if you want a date, you don’t need to pretend Bobby wants to sue. You could just ask me, and I would tell you to meet me on Saturday at noon at the Rivendell Hotel.”

A smirk tugs at the corner of her lips, and she raises an eyebrow. “Don’t hold your breath, sir.”

“Sir, I like the sound of that.”

She rolls her eyes.

I chuckle, shaking my head. “You better show up, or I’ll hunt you down.”

A genuine smile graces her features, her gray eyes twinkling with a touch of mischief. “Take care of your hand…” she advises before turning to walk away.

“Alessandro. My name is Alessandro,” I provide.

“Well, take care of your hand, Alessandro.”

She is walking away too fucking fast. I know nothing about her.

I can’t resist calling after her.

I want to know her name. I need to know it.

“And what’s your name, damsel?” I shout.

She glances back, her lips forming the word silently before mouthing it and disappearing around the corner.

Rachel.
