“Seriously Rach? You want to add credit card fraud to your list of crimes?”

“Hey! It cannot be worse than murder, right?” I scoff.

She is quiet for a bit and I know I have overstepped a boundary. She is helpful and she is supportive but she still has all these Law-and-Order ideals that murder is wrong and she is always reminding me of myhumanity. And then right on cue, she sighs, “I don’t like it when you talk like that.”

“I know,” I flinch, “I am sorry. Buy you coffee at nine? That is the fastest I can get there.”

“Fine. You’re lucky I love you.”

“I know Soph, see you in a couple of hours.”

Now that we have that sorted, I have exactly two hours to kill before I start the commute across town, and I know the best way to kill them.

I slide my fingers between my already slick legs. I am so wet, they slid right in.

My back arches as I chase the familiar rush, all the time wishing it was Alessandro’s hand instead of mine.

As usual, I get there a little earlier than Sophie. The atmosphere in the hotel’s restaurant is calm and relaxed. I take a seat at a table near the window, away from the prying eyes of any potential onlookers.

The waiter comes by, and I order a full breakfast spread, making sure to add a cappuccino to the mix. Once he leaves to process my order, I look around to confirm that the room is relatively isolated.

My breakfast arrives, and I set the phone aside momentarily to dig into the delicious spread. As I sip my cappuccino, I can’t help but wonder what Sophie might have in store for me today. The file on Dante Ricci is a potential lead in our ongoing investigation, and I’m eager to see what she’s uncovered.

The faster I get rid of him, the faster I can get to my final target.

The faster I get rid of all of them, the sooner I get to rest.

I take another bite of the croissant on my plate, savoring the flavors while my mind wanders. This world of secrets, danger, and constant vigilance is my reality, and I’ve accepted it. But sometimes, it’s essential to take a moment to disconnect and find solace in the simple pleasures, like a warm breakfast.

The soft chime of the restaurant’s entrance bell grabs my attention, and I look up to see Sophie making her way towards our table. She’s all business, carrying a folder that’s likely filled with valuable information

Sophie gives me a warm hug, despite my vocal aversion to them. I tolerate it, though, as a token of our partnership and friendship. After her brief embrace, she takes a seat, opting for a glass of orange juice before we dive into the business at hand.

I lean in and inquire, “Any cameras?”

She responds confidently, “I took care of them on my way here.”

My lips curl into a small, satisfied smile. Trusting Sophie with surveillance is a given, as she’s proved her IT prowess time and time again. Her ability to manipulate and disable security systems is a valuable asset in her line of work.

I slide the folder closer, the anticipation building. Sophie takes a sip of her orange juice, giving me a moment to absorb the initial visual impression. Then, she points to the documents and begins, “Dante Ricci, head of the Ricci family, a significant faction of the Cosa Nostra. Known for his involvement in various criminal enterprises, he’s considered a high-value target by law enforcement agencies.”

I nod, my mind processing the information.

These men could have had any woman they wanted on their arm.

Why my mother?

She was just a waitress doing her best to keep herself afloat, and they had to get involved and eventually cause her death.

“There’s more,” Sophie chimes in.

“Tell me…”

“Read the report and then I am going to tell you.”

My eyes scan the full document on the last page of the file.
