CHAPTERNINE

Alessandro

Her gray eyes keep darting from me to the table behind me. I have tried my best to placate this woman but she seems bored and uninterested in the dinner.

Rachel seems distracted. She answers my questions with one-word responses, like she’s got better things to do. It’s puzzling. I picked this place to impress her, but it feels like she’s not impressed at all.

I would have given up and called it a night, if I hadn’t seen the way she eyed me when I picked her up.

She is definitely interested.

She lifts her fork to her mouth, another piece of chicken on it. The movement shifts her dress a little, showing a little more of her skin. Her breasts are up for display. When she opened the door, I almost had to pick up my jaw from the floor.

The tight dress hits way above her knees with a plunging neckline and an even lower backside. The sight of all her skin on display has really tested my resolve and despite wanting to drag her back into her apartment and devour her, I settled on going to dinner.

I want to touch her, constantly and everywhere.

“So, I know about your favorite food and your addiction to mobile games. Now, really tell me something about you Rachel. Something messy, a secret if you will.”

She smiles the way she does when she really does not want to; closed mouth with a subtle lift at the corners.

“What do you want to know?” She says as she cuts another piece of chicken.

“Do you have any siblings?”

Her eyebrows rise once before she shakes her head, “No. You?”

I think about Giulio and the spy he is currently involved with. “Yeah. A younger brother.”

“Interesting,” but she says it in a way that makes it clear that she is not the least bit interested. I look at my watch and find that it has only been forty minutes since we sat down.

I shift and open another button on my shirt. Her eyes shift lower.

Gotcha. This proves exactly what I thought. She is not interested in anything except getting laid tonight. I can get behind that.

I have tried to get her to talk but since that is not happening, I might as well get what we both want.

Just then, our waiter walks in to clear our table. “What can I get you for dessert?”

Rachel shakes her head once. “Nothing for me, thank you.”

“And for you sir?”

I eye her, knowing that the last thing she wants is to be here.

I order an espresso, hoping it’ll lift the mood. “One espresso, please,” I tell the waiter with a smile.

I turn my attention back to Rachel, who still seems preoccupied. “You know, if you’re not in the mood for something heavy, they have a lovely selection of amaros here that go perfectly with dessert,” I suggest, attempting to strike up a conversation about something other than the weather.

She glances at me, but her eyes quickly wander away. “I have an early morning tomorrow,” she says, her voice lacking enthusiasm.

My espresso finally arrives, and I can’t help but savor the anticipation, as the rich aroma wafts to my nose. It is served in a sleek, minimalist cup that perfectly matches the sophisticated vibe of the restaurant. I pick it up and take a small, appreciative sip.

“Buono.”

Her beautiful gray eyes linger on my lips once before looking away.

Rachel’s still distant, her thoughts elsewhere. Her disinterest baffles me. Did I do something wrong? Was the restaurant not to her liking? I wanted to impress her, to make this date unforgettable. I am starting to feel slightly put off.
