“Vinnie is running late but I think we should get started.”

CHAPTERTWENTY

Rachel

Vincenzo Vitori.

Alias Vinnie, Luca’s younger brother.

I saw his picture as I was perusing Luca Vitori’s FBI file. He seems to be in a hurry. He disappears into the crowd until I spot him again running up the stairs, jumping two steps at a time. From the dance floor, I keep moving my hips to the rhythm of the music while I observe Vinnie’s every move. He approaches a door guarded by a man, who seems to politely greet him and then lets him inside. I spot the three golden metallic letters attached to it. VIP. Of course.

I know what a mafia meeting looks like.

My next victim, hopefully Dante Ricci, is in that room.

So, I wait. I’m prepared to wait all night. I need to see who comes out of it.

Almost one hour later, I see two men storm out. I can tell that whatever went down in there, they are not pleased by the outcome. As they reach the staircase, I can distinguish their face features and their identities take less than one second to become familiar to me. Nicola and Benito, the former underbosses of the mafia Dons I killed.

Other than my target, the attendees to this meeting seem to be Vincenzo, Nicola and Benito.

This makes sense. They have every reason to seem upset after a meeting about the infamous serial killer of mafia.

Sometimes I wonder if they fear me. Because they definitely should.

Vinnie hasn’t come out yet.

As if on cue, he steps out of the VIP room, followed by a man whose shoulders and build I know all too well.

It can’t be.

I struggle to make sense of what I’m seeing. The hair, the back, the arms, even the ass. That very nice ass.

I know that ass.

But what if I’m wrong?

I walk towards a dimly lit corridor, relatively away from the dancing crowd, that allows me a bit of privacy. My heart is pounding as I pull out my phone tucked in my bag. I hate the way my fingers shake as I dial his number.

I take the phone to my ear while I fix my gaze on him. My eyes open so wide that it burns not to cry.

I don’t want to see. And yet I can’t look away.

It rings once.

No.

I see him interrupt his conversation with Vincenzo as he reaches into his coat’s pocket.

Please, no.

It rings twice.

He briefly checks the number on the screen, and then he takes the phone to his ear while he presses the green button on the screen to answer the call.

Maybe it’s a coincidence. Maybe he’s someone else, getting a phone call in this exact moment. It could happen.

“Hey,” his voice sounds warm and familiar. My heart is beating right out of my chest. “I haven’t heard from you in a minute.”
