“What do you mean?”
I stretch my arms in front of me before crossing them over my chest. “She has clearly been successful. I think the only other people on her list are me and Moreno. So, what is there for her after she kills us both?”
Sophie shrugs, “I don’t know. Probably therapy. I don’t fucking know, Ricci. I know that all she has ever cared about is avenging her mother.”
“So, I was correct. It is just the two of us remaining on that list.”
She sneers, “Seems you have the full scoop. Yes, Ricci. You are on the list. Or at least one of you Riccis. What the fuck happened to Dante anyway? I know she is hell bent on killing one of you.” I swallow the lump in my throat. I hate that this is what it has come to.
“I don’t have time to answer your questions, but I have something for you” I say as I drag the little note from my pocket, giving it to Sophie.
She sneers, “What is it?”
“The location of Moreno. You’re welcome.”
Confusion flashes over her face before she can once again school her features. “Why are you giving it to me?”
I turn around, “Isn’t it obvious? Give it to Rachel.” Then I turn and begin to walk away.
I am almost at the entrance we came in from before Sophie shouts. “You know she will come for you next.”
“I can almost bet on it,” I say, smiling sadly. Then, before I exit, I add, “And Sophie, this conversation never happened. I hope these tapes you mentioned don’t find a way out of your possession, or next time, I will not stop Giulio.
And then I leave her with the ammunition Rachel needs.
I find Giulio pacing in front of our car. He stops and stares at me before looking behind me to see if Sophie is there. I swear I see his face fall when he realizes I am the only one who stepped out.
“Let’s go,” I say as I slide in the car.
Giulio mutters some curses in Italian as he follows suit, sitting in the driver’s seat and roaring the engine back to life.
“Giulio,” I say.
“Sì?”
“What the hell was that back there?”
He is reversing out of the small abandoned area, his eyes locked on mine through the mirror. “What? I don’t trust her. There is something just off about her.”
I scoff. “Is that all?”
He slams a palm over the steering wheel. “I don’t like her, and I don’t trust her. Honestly Alessandro, I don’t think you should either.”
I frown as I pull out my phone and look at the picture of Rachel once again. The relief I felt when I learned that she had not been violated by the men almost made me laugh out loud. I don’t know what I would have done if Sophie had confirmed my worst fear.
I feel a sore spot form in my chest once again. I rub at the spot.
I know for a fact that if any of the men had laid a finger on her, I would have torn the world apart just to avenge her. I would have torn all of them from limb to limb. I would have gone feral.
And the most insane thing is that I am doing all this for a person who is hell bent on killing me.
Life is a cruel, hilarious master.
“I make the shots. Okay Giulio?”
He scowls before nodding, “Of course,capo.”Despite the situation, I need to remind him who is really in charge at the end of the day.
“This remains between us.”
