I can hear Sophie hesitate for a second, but then she speaks the words so fast that I almost doubt I hear them correctly. “Alessandro Ricci.”

I can feel my blood pressure rising.

“And you really believe him?”

“No, but I do believe that this is our best shot at this.”

So, this is what he is playing at after all. He is dangling the bait he knows I cannot resist. He must have done his research on me, enough to know that Moreno would be my next target and so this is his plan of luring me out.

I hate that it is working.

“Moreno likes to keep a low profile. Why is he at an abandoned building on a random Wednesday?” I ask.

“I just have the information I was given, Rachel,” Sophie says.

“Is that it?” I ask.

“Yeah. So, what are we thinking?” she asks.

“I have to go.”

“What if Alessandro is there? What will you do after you have killed Moreno?”

This is the part that Sophie never gets. She does not understand that there is noafterfor someone like me. My fate was sealed the very moment I was born. I was an anomaly that was never supposed to exist, born out of a vile and violent crime. And through a vile and violent crime, I am going to end it all, once and for all. What else is there for me anyway?

This is how it was always going to end. I was always meant to end it all, by ending myself. I want to tell her all this, I want her to understand.

“I am going to be careful,” I lie instead.

“Rachel, please.”

Moreno was a slippery fucker. I had been biding my time until he showed his face in public. This abandoned building is exactly the right center stage for it all. I could ambush him, kill him and then kill myself. “I have to do this Sophie.”

I open my safe to pull out my calling card. Only two remain tucked safely away. One was meant for Ricci and one for Moreno. Just because I might never be able to use it on the former, does not mean I will not take great pleasure in killing the latter. The thought of his lifeless body makes me want to smile.

It is going to give me such pleasure to drag his life out of him, just like he did with my mother. He is going to pay. He is finally going to be held responsible.

Sophie is typing on her computer on the other side, “That place has no CCTV’s Rachel. There is no way I am going to be able to keep an eye on things and make sure you are safe.”

Sweet Sophie. This is just perfect. No cameras mean there are no witnesses. No way of really knowing what happened, and the more I think about it, I actually feel a little glad that she will not have to watch me kill myself.

I don’t want that to be the last image she has of me.

I had always thought the easiest way would be to shoot myself in the head, but now, if the building is high enough, I might just decide to jump off of it.

“I will have my gun on me Sophie. Moreno is being served up to us on a silver platter, why are you fighting me about it?”

“This is a trap, Rachel. You know this is a trap.”

I am almost filled with a giddy excitement as I lift the box of ammunition from my night stand and refill my gun holster. “I will be careful.”

“Rachel!” I can hear it in her voice, the tone of defeat. She knows that there is no way she is convincing me otherwise. My mind is already set on my mission. I am only focused on getting the Moreno, everything else is white noise.

“Sophie,” I repeat her name, trying hard to keep a smile from my face.

“We can come up with a plan to take him down, just like we did with the others. We don’t have to be reckless about this.”

I take a deep fortifying breath as I wrap my hair up in a bun ready to take a shower.
