Giulio leans forward, his voice hushed, “So, you think these murders are connected?”

I nod, pushing the folded note across the table for him to examine. He studies it intently, his brows furrowing in thought. “This note is a threat, Alessandro,” he says, “It’s a message meant to incite fear. And if it’s linked to the killings of Cenere and De Rossi, it’s a message sent to the entire Cosa Nostra.”

I sigh, my mind racing with the implications. “That’s what I fear. We need to get to the bottom of this, find out who’s behind it and why they’re targeting the families.”

He nods in agreement, his tattoos shifting with the movement of his arms. “I’ve been digging into the backgrounds of Cenere, De Rossi and Vitori. There are connections, rivalries, debts, but nothing concrete. I’ve also been talking to Irina,” he adds, mentioning our contact with ties to the Russian mafia.

I lean in further, eager for any lead. “What did she say?”

Giulio takes a sip of his espresso. “She’s heard whispers, talk of a Russian syndicate planning to expand into our territory. They might be responsible for the recent murders.”

Normally, I try to keep my nose out of other folk’s business, but something about the man talking to the blonde gives me a weird feeling.

“Are you even listening?” Giulio asks as he lifts his aperitivo to his mouth.

“Yeah, yeah… The Russians are testing whether I am really as strong as our father was and trying to take over my trade routes.”

“Exactly. I am meeting with Irina tomorrow to see if she has more information but in the meantime she has told us to be on high alert.”

I turn to face my little brother, “You are going to see her again?”

It is clear as day that his interest in the woman transcends the whole informational transaction we need. “Are you fucking her?”

He chokes and spits his drink. “It is not like that.”

“So, you are fucking her.”

“È complicato.”

“Really? Because I don’t think it is that complicated. It is a yes or no question after all.”

“Alessandro…”

“We cannot have you getting distracted by a spy, Giulio. You are smarter than that.”

“It’s just sex, frate. I admit it. I needed her to trust me so I fucked her, and then we fucked again…”

“Jesus! I don’t need the details.”

He grins up at me. “I am being careful. She is just a warm cunt and a treasure trove of secrets.”

I groan, “I don’t want to hear about it. She is involved with the Russians.”

“I know.”

“Bene. Ricordatelo.”

I turn my attention back to the guy, who just slipped the girl a card. I see he is back with his friends.

Guess they settled their tiff after all. I am just about to turn to my brother when I decide to look towards the door and come face to face with the blonde woman. Our eyes lock for one second as she eyes me almost defiantly. I am tempted to shoot her a grin but decide against it.

Instead, I turn around to face my brother, just in time to see the woman leave the bar and the accountant quietly follow her, making my entire body tense up.

Something is not right.

“Hey,” I tell my brother, “Give me one minute. I will be back.”

He looks confused but does not say anything.
