“Tell me about it,” I roll my eyes.

“I don't have to, you will see for yourself.” She picks up a tray next, puts the plate and cup of coffee on it, and adds the cutlery with a napkin.

“I hope not,” I scoff.

“I understand,” she walks to a drawer behind her to bring out a pack of sugar.

“I doubt you do, you are talking about big hearts and whatnot,” I tsk.

“I am talking about what I have seen and experienced.”

She is doing all of this with a smile on her face. As if she is listening to a joke. She pours me my sugar and stirs the coffee till she is satisfied, “Here you go,” she points at the breakfast in front of us, “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day,” she adds as she slides the tray gently to me.

“So I heard,” I scoff.

“You don't believe me again?”

“It is a fact,” I try to end the conversation.

She looks like she will give me shit if I start to talk about how I usually skip breakfast and have only two cups of coffee.

“Liar,” she smiles, “but as long as you are here, I must make sure you eat breakfast. Thanks to me, Benedetto eats his breakfast whenever he is home,” she walks to the sink and starts to clean up even though I don't see any mess around.

I like her and her vivaciousness. I just smile and nod, then start to eat the lemon cake that melts in my mouth with a sweet, slightly sour taste. The easy way it melts makes the pain from swallowing bearable.

“Hmm, this is good,” I speak with my mouthful.

“Benedetto made it.”

“He what?” My mouth drops.

“He woke up early to make you breakfast,” she shrugs.

I don't know whether to spit out the cake in my mouth or swallow it with the realization that it was baked by the monster.

“Eat up,” Evelyn points to my open mouth and I clamp it, unable to fight the deliciousness of the cake. I swallow.

“She is here,” a male voice howls from behind me, making me crane my neck to see the same person I left Benedetto with the first day I got here. He called him something that I'm scrambling for in my head.

“Good morning, Orazio,” Evelyn smiles at him and he smiles back.

“Morning, Evelyn,” he walks into the kitchen, in his gray sweatpants and royal blue wife beater.

“Hey Rosa,” his smile is a bit tight with me.

“Hey, Oranio,” I return the tight smile and the intentional name mispronunciation.

He chuckles, “Your father and brother are in the sitting room,” he throws at me, and picks up a slice of cake from my plate.

I don't know if he is trying to get a reaction from me with a lie, just as he is doing now by picking from my plate, so I stay calm, eating my breakfast.

As I move to take my cup of coffee, he snatches it, takes a sip, nods, and gulps the remaining content.

“Quit toiling with her,” Evelyn shoves him away and he shrugs abruptly.

“You don't want to see your father and brother or what?” he picks up another slice of cake, the one I'm eating from.

Damn birds of a feather flocking together.
