His words are all I need, and I explode. I can barely breathe as I scream, the sound reverent as it echoes around us. Hot jets of his cum paint my walls and contentment flows through me. Even if it doesn’t make sense. Even if I shouldn’t revel in it.

I sink down into the bed, the touch of my husband lulling me into a state of bliss as satisfaction wraps around me like a blanket. I feel him kiss my temple and then darkness consumes me.

CHAPTER 8

VIKTOR

Not even the sight of my wife in a sexy dress is enough of a distraction from the thoughts swirling through my mind. I spent last night showing Calla how much she means to me and proving to her how much everything has changed since we started. I had to.

Hearing the way Pavel spoke to her sparked a rage in me I have never experienced before. I had to show her. I had to cherish her.

Then I slipped from our bed this morning after not being able to sleep. I made sure she slept safely all night while curled into my side. It was almost enough to bring me comfort. Almost.

Nikolai was surprised to see me waiting for him in his office, but he quickly masked it and smirked at me as he sat down. It was clear he thought he had me all figured out. There was a challenge in his voice as he arched an eyebrow, “Are you here to try and talk me into allowing you to annul your marriage?”

“No,” I gritted out through my teeth, “Calla is mine.”

Nikolai sat back, his smirk morphing into a full-blown smile, one I had only seen Mistie be able to put on his face. “Of course she is,” he retorted smugly while pointing at me, “she’s yourwife.”

“Damn fucking straight,” I growled. He threw his head back and laughed and I could only shake my head and try not to join him. It was the anger brimming inside of me that kept my own amusement at the situation at bay. I leaned forward in my chair and rested my elbows on my knees, “Pavel is a problem. He needs to be dealt with. Until he is, he’s a danger to my wife.”

Nikolai sobered instantly which didn’t surprise me at all. Family has always been his biggest loyalty, even ahead of the business. He accepted Calla as his family even before I accepted that the pull between us was real.

Nikolai’s eyes bored into mine, his voice taking on a dangerous edge, “What happened?”

I told him about the phone call I overheard and watched as his anger grew to rival my own. When I was done, he scratched the underside of his jaw. “If he wants a meeting, that’s fine. I’ll grant him one.” He shrugged one of his shoulders as if it were no big deal, even though we both knew it was. “He’ll just find it won’t go how he thinks it will.”

“I don’t trust him,” I growled.

Nikolai nodded sagely. “You shouldn’t.” He scrubbed his hand over his face, a sign of weakness he rarely allowed. “I’ve suspected the circumstances around the death of Calla’s parents weren’t an accident for a while.”

I sat up straighter in my chair. “You think he killed them to take over as the head of the family.”

“I have no proof,” he countered, hedging slightly.

It didn’t really matter if there was proof, the more the accusation twisted through my mind, the more plausible itfelt. My heart ached for Calla, and I laid out for Nikolai how things between the siblings had changed after the death of their parents, even though it was never good to begin with.

“I don’t want him to touch her. She’s mine and I will protect her with my life,” my words were laced with a vehemence that came from the depths of me, a feeling I had never experienced before.

Nikolai tried to hide his smile, but his eyes sparkled. “I’m proud of you, Viktor.”

My chest swelled at his words, but my focus remained on Calla. I would have soaked up his praise, but I had something else requiring me to not trip over my ego. Her. Always her.

“Are you sure this is a good idea?” Calla’s timid voice pulls me from my thoughts, and I glance over to see her nibbling on her bottom lip.

I reach over and rest my hand on her exposed knee. The dress she’s wearing is sexy as hell on her, but it’s more modest than the women I used to associate with would wear. I’m more than glad for it, but I know men will still be checking her out tonight. Hopefully my first kill won’t be happening because someone tries to make a move on my wife, but if that’s how it goes down then so be it.

I give her knee a squeeze, my voice smooth and reassuring, “It’ll be fine. We don’t have to stay out long, and I won’t be drinking since I’m driving. We’re young, we can go out and have a little fun.”

“I’ve never been to a club before,” she admits quietly.

I can only smile because I’ll be walking into the club with the most beautiful woman in the room. I hope my friends won’tbe assholes to her and she can have some fun. She deserves it, especially considering how sheltered she’s been.

I want her to have the world and experience new things. This is an easy experience to give her.

I can feel how nervous she is while we park, and I lead her to the front of the line at the club with a hand against the small of her back. Her ring catches the neon lights, and I find myself standing a little bit taller.

Once we check our coats, I lace our fingers together and lead her into the main room of the club. Her expressive eyes dart around and take in the press of the bodies on the dance floor as the music pounds in the room around us. I know I’ve made the right move when her lips tip up in an excited smile.
