“Do you know anything else about him?” I asked as the countryside passed us by.

We’d be leaving North Dakota soon and crossing into Montana.

“He is the twin brother of the future alpha.”

Dad didn’t say anything else; whether it was because he didn’t know or he didn’t want to scare me was debatable.

“Sloane.” He reached out and put his hand on mine. “You will always have a home with us. No matter what, you can come back. Anytime. We can even turn back right now.”

I swallowed hard and then turned to face him. “I know, Dad. I love you and Mom and everyone so much. But if this brings peace, then I can do this knowing you are all safe.”

“Part of me wishes you’d tell me to turn the car around.” He squeezed my hand before lifting it to his lips and kissing the back of my knuckles.

Ricky, the enforcer in the front driving, spoke up. “Say the word, Alpha, and I’ll turn around right now.” His gaze flicked to mine. “We’ll support you, Sloane, no matter what you choose.”

My heart swelled at his offer. Those words could get him killed.

“No.” My voice was soft but firm. I knew they were trying to help me, but I just wanted to get this over with.

It would be all too easy to run away and go back home, but then what? The murders would never stop. We’d all end up dead.

My dad waved his hand, and Ricky sighed, turning his attention back to the road.

I turned back to the window just in time to see the welcome sign to Montana. We were almost there.

My belly knotted and cramped. I shifted in my seat, but it did little to ease the nausea.

“Do you remember Willa from Pack Hampton?” my dad asked.

I narrowed my eyes but didn’t pull my gaze from the scenery outside. “Yes. Why?”

My dad sighed. “She has been promised to the future alpha, Sawyer. The two of you got along when we visited Pack Hampton a few years ago. I hope the two of you will be able to spend some time together again in your new pack.”

Bile crept up my throat. “She’s younger than me.”

Sixteen or seventeen, if I remembered correctly.

“My hope is the two of you will look out for each other.” He patted my thigh.

I gritted my teeth so hard I feared my jaw might pop. She was just a baby. At leastIwas of age. My twentieth birthday had passed a few months ago. Poor Willa.

My dad let go of my leg when his phone rang. He cursed under his breath and fumbled in his jacket pocket.

“Hello?” His voice wavered.

I turned, tension forming between my eyebrows as redness tinged his cheeks. It wasn’t like him to get flustered.

A voice shouted on the other end of the phone. “You’re supposed to be here in ten minutes! Do I need to remind you of what will happen if you are late?”

My dad’s hand trembled as he gripped the phone tighter. “Wearealmost there.”

He glanced at Ricky who gave him a nod.

“You better be. My men aren’t far from your pack. One wrong move, and you’ll have no sons left.”

The call clicked off, and my dad dropped the phone to his lap and scrubbed a hand over his face. He glanced out the window, but not fast enough. His eyes were rimmed red.

He was probably thinking of what had already happened to Darrin and my aunt and uncle. There had been so much needless loss because of this tyrant. How much more might Alpha Dane take from those who opposed him?
