Sawyer blinked and then stepped back like I’d hit him. “Sloane, we can’t.” His voice came out harsh.

I backed away from him until my back hit the wall.

Oh crap. I almost kissed him.

Sawyer cleared his throat. “We have to fight it.”

I put my hand over my lips and trembled. He’d been so close. I’d heard that when you found your true mate, the urge to consummate was unbearable. That didn’t even describe the feeling.

My desire to be with Lincoln and Sawyer was like a raging inferno. The more time we spent together, the hotter it got. It was only a matter of time until we all went up in smoke.

Sweat beaded my brow, my pulse quickened as heat engulfed me. I fanned myself and closed my eyes, trying and failing to contain my arousal.

“Hey,” Willa called, drawing me out of my trance. She held up two shirts and a pair of jeans. “What do you think of these, Sloane?”

I snapped my attention to her, thankful for the distraction. “Those look nice.”

Sawyer forced a smile. “Let’s get them.” He turned his attention back to me, his eyes sweeping over my form. “Then we’ll go someplace for you to get some things too.”

Willa grabbed my hand and pulled me to one of the racks. “Sloane, did you see these?” She picked up a soft gray shirt with a wolf on it. “Aren’t they cute?”

I reached out and touched the fabric. “It is nice.”

She beamed at me. “You should get one too.”

I took the shirt from her. It was my size. “Okay.”

Why not? I could probably change into it now. Maybe my brain would function better if I wasn’t wrapped up in Lincoln’s scent. I grabbed a pair of jeans from the rack and followed them to the counter.

Sawyer paid and took both our bags.

Willa walked with a little more pep in her step now, and a small smile had formed on her face. “Do we have a limit on what we can spend?”

Sawyer chuckled. “Not that my dad said. You two should get anything and everything you want. I can’t guarantee you the next time we’ll have the opportunity to come out again. He only makes a trip out every few months.”

Cold dread washed over me. “Where did your dad go today?” My pulse roared in my ears.

Sawyer’s face grew somber, and he looked at the ground. “He went to get wolfsbane.”

Willa gasped and grabbed my arm. “That’s deadly to wolves in large doses. It makes it impossible to shift.”

I held my breath as I waited for Sawyer to continue.

“It’s what he does to packs that refuse to comply.”

They were going to visit a pack in a few days. Anyone who didn’t conform was going to be slaughtered, and Alpha Dane would make sure there were no survivors.

Nine

I’d thought Alpha Dane’sstares were creepy, but Mikey, the youngest brother, was far worse. He hadn’t taken his eyes off Willa and me since we’d sat down. I’d never understood the phrase undressing with your eyes until right now.

I pulled my teal cardigan tighter and shifted in my seat. Gooseflesh pimpled my skin, and I shuddered.

I darted my gaze to the clock. Dinner was supposed to start at six, but we were still waiting on Alpha Dane. No one had touched their food yet, and with the way Mikey was staring at me, my appetite was quickly diminishing.

Footsteps thudded against the floor, and the alpha appeared in the doorway and made his way to the head of the table. “Let’s eat. This will be our last family meal for a few days. I’ve moved up the timeline. We leave first thing in the morning.”

Alpha Dane took a seat in his spot and dug in.
