“Oh god.”

“You don’t have to watch this, Sloane.”

“I have to. I have to see Sawyer and make sure he’s okay.”

Alpha Dane whistled, and howls erupted, echoing through the afternoon sky. I stiffened as wolves leaped out from their hiding spaces and descended on the Delidos. The alpha lurched forward, attempting to shift, but instead, he fell on his knees.

He should have shifted by now.

“The wolfsbane,” I said, my voice a hoarse whisper.

Lincoln tried to pull me to him so we were chest to chest. “Look away, Sloane.”

I pushed away so hard I stumbled and fell onto my hands and butt. Mud soaked into my jeans and seeped between my fingers. I snapped my attention back to the scene in time to see Alpha Dane change.

He didn’t give Alpha Delido a chance to defend himself before he went in for the kill.

I gasped, an indescribable sound coming from my mouth as the alpha’s throat was ripped out. Blood sprayed everywhere, and the alpha collapsed to the ground, unmoving.

The rest of the Delidos fell into formation and did the best they could to fight back. It was a losing battle. They were no match for the wolves. They were outnumbered four to one.

My belly rumbled. Bile crept up my throat, making me gag, and then I vomited in the dirt in front of me. I choked again. There was so much blood and death. I knew Alpha Dane was a vicious monster, but this was sickening.

Lincoln dropped down next to me. “Sloane.” He put his hand on my back and pushed strands of hair from my face. “Are you okay?”

Tears pricked my eyes as I turned to Lincoln. “He’s going to kill them all, isn’t he?”

Lincoln moved so he was in front of me and blocking my view. He hugged me close, pulling my head so my face was buried in his shoulder. “I don’t know. He might keep some of the younger kids to bring to the pack. And the women.”

That could be a fate worse than death. Tears cascaded down my cheeks, mixing with the rain that was already beading on my face.

He rubbed my back and then moved away from me, going to the car. He came back with a bottle of water. “Here. Maybe this will help.”

I took the bottle with trembling hands and swished the cool liquid around before spitting it out. “Thanks.”

Footsteps sloshed through the mud behind me, and Willa sprinted by and put her hand on a tree. “Sloane, look.”

I peered around Lincoln to follow her line of sight. To the right, in the distance, was a group of people darting through the trees. It was members of the Delido Pack fleeing.

Willa took a few steps forward. “Jacob’s with them.”

She tore off in a direction that would intercept them.

“Willa, wait!” I pushed to my feet and made to dash after her.

Lincoln grabbed my elbow. “If my father catches them… If he thinks either of you is escaping…”

“I know. We have to stop her.” I chanced a glance over my shoulder at the carnage below. Alpha Dane was preoccupied with the fighting. “Wehaveto stop her.”

Lincoln regarded me for a long moment before nodding. “Let’s go.”

He turned on his heel and dashed in the direction Willa had gone.

I raced after him. The mud squished beneath my sneakers, and it made the trek slippery. It worked to my advantage and disadvantage. Willa had slowed some since she’d almost wiped out twice in a row.

She was still too far ahead. I could hear her calling to Jacob. If I could hear her, then so could other members of Pack Wolf Blood.

My thighs burned as I pushed myself faster. I slid and reached out for a branch to catch myself. Thorns dug into my palms, and my feet slid out from under me.
