I turned to the window and looked outside. The way up here, I’d been stuck in my own head. I hadn’t paid much attention to where we were.

Lincoln let go of my thigh and moved back to the front seat. He tapped on his phone then picked up Sawyer’s and messed with the GPS. “It’s about thirty minutes out of our way. You think we can make it there in time?”

Sawyer shifted the car into a lower gear, revving the engine. I fell back in my seat as the car accelerated. “We’ll try.”

Lincoln picked his phone back up and started scrolling. “I’ll keep looking for a way to find their number.”

The trees whirled by. Lightning lit the sky in the distance. The storms were going to be rolling in again soon.

“What do we do when we get there? We can’t just roll up. What if someone sees us?” I asked.

Sawyer looked into the rearview mirror and met my eyes. “We’ll assess when we get there.”

He slowed the car just enough to keep us from going off the road before taking a turn.

The first drops of rain were starting to fall. The water rippled as the droplets hit it. Foreboding filled me.

My hands shook, and tears misted my eyes.

Lincoln’s face lit up. “Got it.”

He hit his phone a few more times, and then it started to ring.

I held my breath. The ringing filled the car until the phone clicked and voice mail picked up.

Lincoln hung up and tried again. No answer.

He cursed and set the phone in his lap.

Sawyer looked at him. “Dad can’t trace the number to you, can he?”

Lincoln gave Sawyer a glare. “Of course not. I blocked it.”

He nodded his head once. “Good.”

The car slowed, and I put my hand on the passenger seat to keep from falling forward.

“What are you doing?” I protested, looking at Sawyer.

He pointed to the right. “Look.”

I followed the direction he was pointing. In the distance, just above the trees and mountains, was a giant plume of black smoke.

The breath whooshed out of my lungs. I put my hand over my chest as the hole there seemed to cut deeper. I couldn’t draw a breath.

We were too late. The Hampton Pack was gone.

Fifteen

The car tires crunchedunder the gravel as we made our way down the drive to the Wolf Blood estate. A few men waited out front. They had blood smeared all over their clothes.

Blood seemed to be something they wore like a badge of honor. I guess that’s why they were called Pack Wolf Blood. They enjoyed getting the blood of other wolves on them.

My stomach turned. How could anyone turn on their pack and come here willingly? There was something very wrong with these people. I prayed Luna punished them in the afterlife.

Sawyer slowed the car as we approached the house. “Lincoln, take Sloane and show her the waterfall we like. She hasn’t shifted since arriving. It would be good for her to get out.”

Lincoln looked at Sawyer, then at the men who were grinning from ear to ear. “Yeah. Why don’t you meet us back there?”
