His brow furrowed.

I clasped my hands together. “Think about it. Those are two of the most heavily populated cities on the East Coast. The airports are set up for international travel. We could reach packs from overseas. We need an army. And if we can’t shift, that means they can’t either.”

He raked a hand through his hair. “You make valid points. We’re going to need to allow enough time for people to prep and come, especially if you want to reach packs from overseas.”

I sighed and worried my bottom lip. The longer we waited, the more risk to us. Plus, Alpha Dane might grow stronger too. “Six weeks from now.”

That sounded so far away.

Lincoln drew in a deep breath and then let it out. He put his fingers back on the keys and began to type.

I leaned over his shoulder, reading as he typed a million words a minute onto the screen. He glanced at me for a moment before he hit enter.

The meeting was set for Chicago, the first weekend in December, with more details to come soon. There was no going back now. Luna help us.

I leaned into Lincoln and closed my eyes. We were going to do this. It was going to work.

But then my moment of hope was shattered by a loud banging on the bedroom door.

“Lincoln!”

It was Alpha Dane.

Seventeen

I stiffened and graspedLincoln’s hand. My heart pounded. We should have never set up that meeting. He knew. Why else would he be here?

No. He couldn’t. We’d just done it. Maybe he was having second thoughts about Willa. Or this was about me speaking up.

The door rattled as the alpha pummeled from the other side. “Lincoln, I know you’re in there. Let’s go.”

Lincoln picked up my hand and gave it a kiss. “Get ready to run if needed.”

Tears pricked my eyes, and I shook my head as he pulled his hand out of mine and crossed the room.

He drew in a deep breath and then let it out before opening the door. “Father.”

“I need Sloane.”

Lincoln stiffened and grasped the edge of the door tighter. “Why?”

I held my breath and waited for his answer.

“It’s the girl. She’s inconsolable. Doc is worried if she doesn’t calm down, she may lose the baby. We’ve already tried a sedative, and it didn’t work.”

The bed creaked as I got up. I padded across the floor and put my hand on Lincoln’s shoulder. “I’ll go talk to her.”

Alpha Dane stepped back and motioned down the hall. Was the infirmary that way? Maybe. But someone else’s room was. Sawyer’s.

Lincoln looked down the hall. “Sawyer’s room?”

Alpha Dane rolled his eyes. “We took her there thinking some familiarity might calm her down. It didn’t work. That girl is so weak. It’s a good thing she won’t live long enough to raise the pup. We’ll make sure he is strong.”

I bit the inside of my cheek. One day I was going to give him a piece of my mind, and for a change, it would be him who was terrified and not me or Willa.

Those are some dark thoughts, Sloane. Don’t go down that path.

Lincoln put his arm around me and led me down the hall. Sawyer’s bedroom door opened, and he stepped out. His eyes widened when he saw me, and he bowed his head.
