My pulse roared in my ears. What was going on? He knew something. Suspected.

Please, no.

“It seems some packs think they can defy me. They are gathering without my permission and have intentions of coming here.”

I gulped. He’d seen the message about the meeting in Chicago.

Every muscle in my body ached from how tense I was. My heart pounded violently against my ribs.

Lincoln was quiet for a long moment. His shoulders stiffened as his hands fisted at his sides. “What do you want me to do about it?”

Alpha Dane narrowed his eyes at Lincoln. His feet crunched against the gravel as he closed the distance between us.

He knows! He’s going to kill us.

Run. Run. Run.

I shuffled backward and pulled on Lincoln’s arm. He didn’t budge. Instead, he stayed rooted in his spot. I yanked on his arm, but it did nothing.

Had he lost his mind? We needed to get out of here while we still could.

Alpha Dane stopped when he was toe-to-toe with Lincoln. “I want you to figure out how they are organizing. It’s possible that we have a traitor in our midst.”

His gaze snapped to me.

I gritted my teeth. I balled my fists to keep my hands from shaking. I blinked and looked up at him, meeting his gaze.

He gave me a cocky grin and then a wink. “The Delidos knew we were coming. I need to know that Willa was our only traitor. She came here with nothing. I find it hard to believe that she was working alone. That behavior can’t go unpunished. We need to show we have control of our pack, and that starts here at home.”

Lincoln inclined his head. “I’ll see what I can find out.”

Alpha Dane put his hand on Lincoln’s shoulder. “Good. These packs are assembling, which we can’t allow to happen. They areopenly defying me on the shifter site like I don’t see it. It’s an eight-hour drive from here. Sawyer and I have already discussed it. We plan to leave once Mikey returns. I’ll need to monitor their chatter on the website’s forum. We don’t want them to know our plans.”

Lincoln exhaled and nodded. “When do you expect Mikey back?”

“Tomorrow night. We’ll leave first thing in the morning once the men have had a chance to rest. We won’t let them continue to build their numbers. We will snuff out this little band of resistance before they become a problem.”

Lincoln cleared his throat. “I think I’d be best suited to stay here.”

Alpha Dane narrowed his eyes. His grip on Lincoln’s shoulder tightened, making Lincoln flinch. “Why is that?”

Lincoln kept his head held tall. “What you are asking of me requires a laptop. You know how hard it is to use your phone as a computer, Dad.”

The alpha cocked his head to the side. “And?”

“For me to do my work, I need a stable internet connection. I’m not going to get that while we drive. Hot spots and mobile Wi-Fi aren’t the same as the internet we have here. If I lose connection and can’t get it back, I could miss vital information on this forum.”

Alpha Dane patted Lincoln’s shoulder. “I don’t understand all of that nonsense, but I’ll take your word for it. It would do some good for you to stay behind. I have no doubt that Sawyer will have you as his second when he takes over the pack. It’s high time you learn to lead here.”

Lincoln paled. His jaw worked. “Dad.”

I squeezed his hand. We’d figure this out together. He wasn’t alone.

Alpha Dane held up a finger and shoved it in Lincoln’s face. “I’ve coddled you too much. Let you bury your face in the woods or your room. It’s time you start making a presence to the pack. You’ll be in charge while I am gone.”

Lincoln opened his mouth, but he didn’t get a word out. The alpha shoved him. Lincoln stumbled into me.

I grunted as I tripped over my feet and fell to the ground. Lincoln growled low in his throat. I snapped my attention from father to son.
