“The nightmares.”

“I can help you with that,” I pull my gun, cock it and put it to his head.

Dom puts his hand over my gun, “No. It should be Lara.”

“I don’t want her going through that,” I say. “No, I’ll do it.”

“Neither do I, but she’s a patch, it’s her right.”

“NO!”

He pushes me, “I’m the president of this motherfucking club! It is what it is! We all wanted her to get patched and this is what it means! All or nothing!”

I take a deep breath. I’m an inch away from decking him.

“Now holster that sidearm and step back.”

Fucking asshole.I do as he says.

Dom goes to the door and sticks his head out. “Get Lara and Bret, then join us.”

We wait patiently…then Malcolm raises his head and looks at me, “I didn’t mean it, Chase.”

I can’t control myself, “Shut the fuck up!” I lash out and smash him in the face. The back of his head bounces off the pole making a hollow ringing sound and blood pours from his nose.

Dom doesn’t react. He just gives me one of his stares and I step back before I do even more damage to Malcolm.

He didn’t mean it.The same way those guys cheating at cards didn’t mean it. What the fuck kind of excuse is that—I didn’t mean it?

A short while later, there’s a knock on the door and Dom says, “Come.”

Nick, Lara, Bret and Rick come into the room. They all have curious looks on their faces. Lara most of all. She’s only got her patch today. If Luke wasn’t her brother, I’d never allow this…even if I had to fight Dom over it.

“There’s something we have to tell you,” Dom says to Lara looking at her for a long moment, before turning to the rest of the guys. “All of you.”

“Yeah?” Nick asks.

Dom looks at Lara and points to Malcolm, “This is the man who killed your brother.” He looks at everyone else in turn, “This is the man who killed Luke Kairn.”

Lara’s eyes are wide, “You said it was an accident.”

“We had to do that at the time, because hours after this piece of shit shot Luke, he got picked up on an illegal weapon’s charge and has been rotting in jail ever since.”

I take over, “We take care of our own business in this club. If there’s retribution to be had, it’s ours, not the state’s or the government’s.”

“The sheriff knows about it,” Dom says. “He helped us cover it up and gave us permission to exact our own justice, so long as it’s not near town.”

I point to Malcolm, “His boss knows about it too. Malcolm Cortez here used to ride for the Devil’s Horde. Their president, Nico, has also given us permission to take him out.”

Bret looks pissed off, “Why didn’t you tell us? I mean…it’sus! Why did you lie?”

“You think I wanted to?!” Dom shouts. “We did it to keep a war from happening! If I’d told you that a Devil had taken out Luke, then the ten of you would’ve gone out there with three-to-one odds and gotten yourselves killed trying to get justice!”

“That’s fucking bullshit, Dom,” Nick says. “It’s been more than two years and you’re telling me there was never a good time to tell us? Evenafterthings calmed down?”

“Things were calm because you didn’t know,” I say. “We still do business with the Devils. Would you all have gone on shaking hands with them and playing nice if you knew? Or would you have held them responsible?”

They’re all quiet for a moment…considering the fact that I’m right, till Bret says, “That’s why you followed us out there that night to the Horde’s compound and held a gun to that Devil’s head?”
