“Wow. Okay,” she’s never sounded so serious before. Not in recent memory at least. “Do you want a drink?”

“Afterwards,” she points to a table. “Let’s go over there, I’m just going to say hi to Lara.”

“Okay…” I do as she asks, go to the table, sit down and wait for her.

Cassidy hugs Lara, chats a bit wearing a smile that looks more polite than heartfelt, taps the counter three times and then comes to the table… the smile is gone.

“You’re weirding me out, Cas. What’s going on?”

She clears her throat, “So, listen, last night I was here and some douchebag started hitting on me.”

Fucking disrespectful assholes.“What’s his name?” I stand up. “I’ll take care of him. What did he—”

Cas pulls me back down with a smile on her face, “It’s fine. Rick was here, he tuned the guy up.”

“Okay.” Well, that’s what he’s supposed to do. We look out for family. “So, what’s the problem?”

“Uh…” she nervously bites a nail.

“Just spit it out, Cassidy.”

“Well,” the words pour out of her like falling dominos. “He sat with me for a little while and we got to talking and one thing led to another and we kissed.”

I literally feel my temperature rise by at least three degrees, “My own sister,” I shake my head. “You should know better Cassidy. I’m going to have to sort this out with Rick now. You know that, right?”

“Nick, just listen—”

“What?”

“It’s not his fault,Isort of came on tohim. He told me it was wrong.”

“Well, he damn well should have!”

“He said it was probably because I’d had too much to drink and I wasn’t thinking straight because someone like me shouldn’t want to be with a guy like him.”

“And he’s right! You can do a lot fucking better than Rick, Cassidy.”

“That’s not true, Nick. He’s sweet and kind. You should have seen how he looked after me. He wanted me to let it go but I wouldn’t.”

“And then what happened?”If she tells me they slept together, he’s a dead man.

“He said that we would talk today. We were going to meet at the diner in town. He said if I was still sure and wanted to give a relationship with him a shot, then he would talk to you about it.”

Hmm.Thatisthe way to go about things. I can respect that. Rick’s also not a bad guy. He’s decent looking too. I’m not saying that in agaykind of way, but a man confident in his looks can call another guygood-looking—Rick’s alright.

“Nick?” Cassidy snaps me back to the present.

“Yeah?”

“He blew me off. He called me, said something came up and now he won’t answer his phone. I think he’s ghosting me because he’s afraid of how you’ll react.”

Haha!Rick doesn’t take shit fromanyone. He hasn’t ghosted her, he’s riding south with Dom.I can use this.

“Nick!” Cassidy sounds frustrated.

“What?”

“Do something! I really like him.”
