When I step up to his half house, half office porch, he takes my arm and gives me a bro-hug…we even pat each other on the back. We do it for show to keep the peace.

It’s not that I despise Nico. He’s been a decent guy to work with over the years. It’s just that we were never able to resolve this situation and it’s been hanging over us like a dark cloud ever since.

I step through into the room. There’s a desk and chairs, a bed, an adjoining toilet and bathroom, everything is wood and everything is dark. The light we’ve got is from a kerosene burner.

They use a diesel generator to run the spotlight and their power tools. Everything else is off the grid. Part of their ethos is to never pay theman.

No bills, no social security, no licenses of any kind.

Nico closes the door behind me and asks, “You want a drink?”

“No, I don’t want a fucking drink, Nico. Where the fuck is he?”

“Listen to me cabrón, I don’t know why you think he would be coming back here. Even Malcolm wouldn’t be that stupid.”

“Did you ever reach out to him in prison?”

“Never,” he shakes his head with a pout.

“Did he ever reach out to any ofyou?”

“Not that I know of, but there are almost thirty guys out there, amigo. I don’t sing each one of them lullabies and tuck them into bed at night.”

“Well, if they knew anything…if Malcolm talked…it sure as fuck wouldn’t be a secret anymore. Every single one of your guys would know about it.”

Chase

I’ve been riding like a bat out of hell to make up time. I’m not going to let Dom take this away from me. Not a fucking chance!

Five in convoy won’t be going as fast as me. As long as they don’t have too much of a head start, I’ll catch them.

These fucking roads are so goddamn dark, I’ve almost wiped out twice already, but I can’t let up.

He’s not going to take this from me. I won’t let him! I go even faster!

I pass the sign announcing that I’d come in toBeckerat least fifteen miles ago. I keep watching the horizon for a sign of the Horde’s camp.

It’s not easy in the dark.

But then, far in the distance I spot a dust cloud and hear the faint roar of engines. I watch it…and a minute later…I see the spotlight come down on the Reapers.

I’m about ten minutes behind.

I go faster.

Dominic

There’s not much else I can do here. Nico is either playing dumb or heisdumb. I ask my last question, “What are you going to do if he shows up?”

“Nothing.”

“Nothing?”

“We have by-laws too, cabrón.”Rules that govern patch members.“He killed a friend to the club. It’s not a hanging offence. It’s an excommunicable one. He has no home here, but I’m not killing him on sight either.”
