“I definitely want.”

Lara gives me a smile and as she turns for the door, I stop her with a hand on her arm.

“I love you, Lara. You know that, right?”

She looks down shyly and I think I may have pushed it too far, till she meets my gaze and says, “I love you too, Nick.” Then she gives me a kiss.

Chapter Fourteen

Chase

My eyes open when the first lead pipe hits me in the arm. I reach for my gun, but it’s gone.

I am already on the ground with my back to a wall. There is nowhere to run and no way to fight back. All I can do is cover up and take the beating from the seven Devils who administer it.

Feet, fists, bats and pipes, all came at me.

I feel abandoned.

I feel like I deserved it.

And somewhere deep inside, I think—if this is the end…let it come.

But the end doesn’t come. I wake up hours later in a cage when someone throws a bucket of water on me.

I can barely move. Every bone in my body hurts. It even aches to breathe.

Anyone else would’ve asked—why?

Why has this been done to me?

But it didn’t matter. I’ve done enough. If this wasn’t about putting a gun to a patched member’s head, then it could’ve been for a thousand other things.

My vision is blurry and I’m not sure of the extent of the damage, but I don’t really care. I close my eyes and begin drifting away…thinking I wouldn’t wake again.

A second bucket of water remedies the situation and when I wake next, the sun is beating down on me with a vengeance—it’s from a hole in the sheet metal above me.

It was then that I realize it had been the longest I’ve gone without a drink.

A can of beans with a plastic spoon sticking out of it is offered to me through the cage. I take it.

Then a bottle of water comes. I take that too.

There isn’t much to look at where I am. The cage is out of the way somewhere behind a lot of sheet metal. All I have for company are the faint sounds of talking, working…and life going on without me.

The sheet metal baking in the hot sun made the area of the cage feel like a sauna…and I was sweating buckets.

It stinks.

It smells like years’ worth of booze coming out of my pores.

When the heat finally becomes unbearable and I’m about to strip my clothes off, Nico finally shows up.

“Can you ride?”

“I think so,” the words come out with the rasp of dehydration.

“Here,” he passes me another bottle of water and I gulp it all down with urgency while he unlocks the cage.
