My body feels frozen and rigid…like if it bends too much, it’ll break. Every fucking thing hurts.

I think it was the adrenaline that’s been keeping me going till now.

It never lasts. I’ve been in enough fights to know that it’s thenextday when everything shuts down. In the hours immediately after trauma, your body is fighting back, doing everything it can to keep you alive.

I’m halfway across the room when Stacey gives me a shocked look. “CHASE!”

She leaps over the counter and rushes over to me. “What the hell happened?! We need to get you to the hospital!”

I put out my arm for support and she helps me.

“Where are going?”

I keep limping to the counter. I get there with her help and manage to slide myself onto a stool. Pain shoots through my legs, my ass and my spine…and everywhere else too.

“Do you want me to call someone? Should call Dom? What do I do?”

“Whiskey,” the word comes out with a croak.

“What?”

It hurts, but I turn to her and say again, “Whiskey.”

“Okay,” she hurries through the entrance to her little square arena, forgoing the leap over.

She sets down a glass and starts pouring, I take the bottle from her instead. I put it to my lips with a shaky hand and drink.

I’ve only taken one long sip before I know I can’t hold myself upright anymore.

I feel my body fail me as I fall sideways off the stool and hear Stacey yell my name before I land on my back—hard.I hear the clatter of the bottle rolling away.

The lights start to dim…

I open my eyes when someone slaps my face—it’s Lara.

Her hands are touching me all over, “Where does it hurt?”

“Everywhere.”It really does.

“What happened to you?”

“Life.”Club business is club business. Also, one word at a time is better. It hurts too much to talk.

“Answer the fucking question, Chase!” Now she’s shining a light in my eye. “Your ocular response is a bit delayed. It’s not terrible, but there’s probably minor swelling in your brain.”

“No hospitals.”We don’t go to the hospital unless we’re about to die. It’ll take more than a few Devils with pipes and bats to do that to me.

“If you don’t tell me what happened, I’m going to have to take you to the hospital. Thentheywill ask you the questions you don’t want to answer. Tell me what happened and if I can treat you here, I will.”

“I got jumped by some guys, I didn’t see who. It was in the middle of nowhere. I woke up and came here.”

“You rode your bike in this condition?” She looks mildly shocked.

“Yes.”

“Well, you’re not dying then,” the look on her face is almost like she’s disappointed…I find it strangely attractive. “You’re just really banged up.”

I don’t have a response, so I save my strength.
