In a proper hospital there’d be someone to do all this for him. I’m not a nurse!

If it was anyone else I probably wouldn’t mind, but Chase has always been such a dick!

I hear the water running in the sink and call out, “The plastic ones with tape are meant to stay dry. The other bandages need to breathe, so it’s okay if they get wet. We’ll change them every day.”

“Okay,” he calls back.

The water stops and then it’s silent…till I hear the sound of him peeing like firehose.

There’s a flush and silence again.

Now that his ass is out of bed, I may as well change the sheets. This one is messy already and probably needs to be burned! I rummage through his closet, find a fresh one and make it happen.

Just as I finish, Chase calls out, “Lara?”

Please, God.“Yeah?”

“I…uh…need some help.”

NOOOO!

I go to the door and say, “Can I come in? Are you decent?”

“Yeah, come in please.”

I open the door and he’s standing at the sink, looking ashamed…and it makes me sad even though I want to punch him in the face! “What is it?’

“I can’t reach my back. It hurts too much. I think I might pop the stitches too.”

Sigh. “Here,” I take the cloth from him. “I’ll do it.”

I’m not exactlygentle, but I’m notrougheither. I clean his back with the washcloth then dry him with a clean towel—he has lots of muscles.

Oh, come on! It’s impossiblenotto notice. “Done. Let’s get you back to bed.”

“Thank you.”

“Mm.”

This is getting annoying. It’s really hard to hate someone when they’re in this condition.

Once I get him laying down again, I say, “Find something to watch on TV. I’ll bring you something to eat.”

He nods and I leave.

I think it going to be the microwave dinner—it’s quick and I want to get out of here.

I heat one up according to the instructions feeling a little disappointed that people actually eat these…but hey, they’re convenient and tick plenty of boxes when it comes to dietary requirements.

I go back to Chase and tell him to sit up, then put the tray with dinner on his lap.

“Thank you, Lara.”

Why does he keep saying my name like that!

I look at the TV, he’s watching something about World War Two. I take out some more muscle relaxants and painkiller and leave them on the nightstand along with a glass of water.

“So, finish your food, then take these pills and get some sleep,” I say. “I’ll come back later and we can change those bandages.”
