I feel nervous about seeing her. I don’t know what I’m going to say. Hopefully she just wants to have lunch.

The diner isn’t anything to write home about. It’s the only one in town and it’s kind of like a Denny’s. Since it’s the only one in town, everyone comes here, and it’s busy all the time.

If someone opened up another one across the street, they’d probably get just as much business if they had a different menu.

A waitress, Denise, comes up to me. Her blonde hair is pulled back in a pony. She’s my age. We went to school together but I haven’t seen her in years. I think she’d left town for a bit. “Bret,” she greets me with a big smile.

She was the head of the rumor mill when she still lived here. “Denise,” I smile back.

“Ain’t seen you in a while, where you been?”

“Busy,” I shrug. “Working.”

“Oh yeah? What kind ‘o work you doin’ now?”

Gun running.

I don’t say that though, thankfully I don’t need to because Lara saves me. I see her come through the door as the bell chimes. She does a three-sixty like she’s flustered, but she spots me when I wave.

Denise turns to see who I’m calling over.

As Lara comes up, she gets a look on her face like she’s trying to remember who’s in front of her.

When she gets closer, she points and says, “Denise, right?”

“That’s me.”

“You went to school with my brother. How’re you doing?”

“Just fine.”

Lara comes around her to me, leans down and gives me a kiss on the lips before taking the seat opposite in the booth.

Denise gets a strange look on her face. “So, uh…what can I get y’all?”

“I’ll take a coffee,” says Lara. “I need to check out the menu before I order, I haven’t been here in a while.”

“Same,” I say. “I mean the coffee. We’ll order at the same time.”

“Coming up,”

When she’s gone, Lara asks, “What’s with the look, did you see that?”

“You mean Denise?”

“Yeah.”

“First time I’m seeing her here. I guess she moved back.”

Lara frowns at me, “From where?”

“Don’t know. I know she used to be the gossip queen though.”

“Whatever,” Lara rolls her eyes and laughs.

She makes me smile, “Well someone’s in a good mood!”

“Now that I’m here with you,” she reaches over and squeezes my hand.
