“I can certainly imagine someonewantingto do that to him, but that doesn’t make it right,” Lara says. “Why aren’t all of you doing something about it? Nobody will tell me anything. You’re supposed to have his back, Dom.”

I’m too tired for this shit. “And where, pray tell, is this concern emanating from? I thought you hated Chase?”

“I do, but what’s the point of being in a gang if the gang doesn’t back you up when it counts?”

I take another sip, “Just let it go, Lara.”

She looks at me shrewdly, “You know what happened, don’t you?”

“Lara, Chase is a big boy, literally. He’s survived worse and he did it without your help. You don’t need to keep going back to his house. That wasn’t my intention.”

“So, whatwasyour intention?”

I might as well tell her and get this over with. “The reason nobody is telling you anything is because we don’t discuss club business with non-members. Not even prospects. But, seeing as you’re family and you’ve been living here with us, I’ll tell you.”

Lara flares her eyes, “Finally!”

“Idid that to Chase.”

“What?!”

“Well, not physically, but I sanctioned it. All the patches know and that’s why they’re not talking about. Chase knows it too. I take it he didn’t say anything?”

Lara looks genuinely shocked. “Why the hell would you do something like that?” She gets to her feet. “Did you all get together and just beat on him till he passed out?”

“Sit down. No, that’s not what we did.”

“Then?” she stomps her foot.

“Sit. Now.”

She looks like she’s turning red, but does what I say.

“Wedidn’t do it, but Chase deserved it. He interrupted a meeting with some associates of ours and held one of them at gunpoint. Chase needed to be taught a lesson he’d remember, but not one that would kill or permanently damage him.”

She shakes her head at me.

“Don’t you worry about Chase, Lara. He’s a glutton for punishment. He fucking enjoys it.”

“How can yousaysomething like that!”

“Honey,” I pat her soft hand. “You don’t know anything about Chase Hennig. So, leave it be.”

“If I know so little, then tell me.” She cradles her chin in her palm and waits.

“You really want to know?”

“I really do.”

Fucking hell.“Lara, I’ve had a long day, I just came in here to say hello and now you’re quizzing me about stories that aren’t mine to tell.” I gesture between the two of us. “This isn’t happening. You’ve got questions? You’re that curious? Go ask Chase yourself.”

“Yeah, like he’d actually say anything to me,” she looks away and shakes her head. “Like he’d say anything to anyone…”

Now she’s going to make me feel guilty. She’s determined.“Why do you care anyway?”

“Because I feel bad for him, Dom,” she actually has a pleading look in her eyes. “Nobody gets like that all by themselves. No one isbornmean. Things happen to people and that’s why they get like that. I just want to know why.”

Fuck it.“I haven’t eaten, if you cook us dinner, I’ll tell you about Chase. Deal?”
