“I’m not sure I’m following you.”

“Why do you only have to loveoneperson? And why does loving that person mean you can’t love anyone else?”

“Tell me what happened with the waitress.”

“About a month ago I walked in there with Bret. He’s my brother’s oldest friend. We have a bond and care for one another. We’ve been sleeping together. The waitress saw us holding hands.”

“Okay.”

“Today I walked in there with Nick. He’smybest friend’s brother. We pretty much grew up together. We care about each other too…a lot. We’re also sleeping together. There’s a reason they call itmaking love. We’re not just fucking like animals.”

“I see.” Wow. I suspected…but I didn’t know it wasbothof them.

“You’re giving me a look,” she frowns.

“No, no, I agree with you, I just didn’t think they’d be okay with that.”

“They are! I told both of them right from the beginning and they’re both a hundred percent cool with it. Love is something you share. You don’t get possessive and cling to it and force it to be yours alone. That’s not love, that’s holding someone hostage!”

She’s actually making a lot of sense.

“You’ve heard that saying—if you love someone, set them free?”

“Yeah, that’s a song, right?”

“Exactly!”

“So, this waitress today, she basically called me a whore under her breath and—”

I try not to let my temper get the better of me anymore, but I immediately blurt out, “What’s this waitress’ name?”

“It’s fine,” Lara waves her hand dismissively, “Nick already got angry enough for both of you and caused a scene. It’s not even about the waitress…she’s been conditioned that way. That’s the point I’m trying to make here.”

“The point?”

“We should be able to love who we want…how we want…and we shouldn’t be judged for it. I mean, whycan’tI love more than one person?”

“I don’t think it’s written down somewhere that youcan’t.”

“It is! If you do a little bit of research, you’ll find it’s all rooted in religion for as far back as you can go,‘God’,” she does air quotes, “invented it.”

“You want to know what I think?” I can’t help the small laugh that escapes me.

She gives me a squinty look and a smile, “What?”

“I think the guy who came up with that had a very small dick and said that a woman had to be a virgin on her wedding night because he knew he could never pleasure her and he didn’t want her to know any different.”

Lara laughs out loud…I do too. When she stops, she stares at me with a smile on her face, then slowly climbs on top of me…her knees on either side of my thighs.

Her hair drapes over me like curtains while she holds my face in her hands. She nuzzles my nose with Eskimo kisses and I feel myself getting hard.

“I care about you, Chase,” she whispers. “Do you care about me?”

“I do.”More than I’ve ever cared about anyone in a long time.

Her lips brush against mine. Her hands go to my neck, then into my hair. “Then why shouldn’t we be able to show each other how we feel?”

My hands, previously at my sides, trace their way over her back.
