Chapter Twenty-Four

Bret

The sun’s just gone down and I’m sitting with Rick, Nick, Cassidy and Chase at the bar. The weirdness around the three of us sleeping with the same person has kind of dissipated over the weeks.

We just don’t talk about it.

I suppose that’soneway of handling an awkward situation.

The other thing we do is…we don’t try to book time with Lara. We let her choose. That way, nobody can get jealous that she’s spending more time with one of us.

Although…that doesn’t really happen because she spends time with all of us equally.

We also don’t advertise our arrangement.

If three of us are in the same room, she won’t kiss all three of us hello. That would be weird on another level!

It’s actually working out a lot better than I’d have thought.

Not to say there isn’t the odd uncomfortable moment…I mean, I’m sure we’re all wondering where Lara is right now, but no one wants to come out and ask.

We’re all just going to wait patiently and see what happens.

Thankfully, before the wait drags on for too long, she bursts through the door with a huge grin on her face and comes straight for the two tables we’ve pushed together.

Dom is right behind her.

“I rode a bike today! All the way to town and back! Tell them, Dom!” The table lights up with smiles because of Lara’s infectious joy.

“Yup,” Dom says. “She’s a natural. Like she’s been doing it all her life!”

“You know,” Cassidy says, “I still haven’t learned. I really should get around to that.”

“It’s awesome,” Lara takes a seat and waves at Stacey. “I almost don’t want to use a car anymore!”

“Yeah,” Chase says, “that’ll happen. There’s nothing like being on the open road with your trusty steed.”

Nick asks, “Did you take her out on the Yamaha?”

Dom nods.

“It’s a good bike,” I say. “But every patch member rides a Harley. It’s not a rule or anything, it’s just something we do.”

“I noticed,” Lara says. “They’re out of my price range though.”

“What is?” Stacey brings two beers for Lara and Dom.

We don’t get a chance to answer that question because we all turn at the sound of a bottle breaking in the corner of the room.

There are four men at the table—civilians.Three of them are regulars, one of them is brand-new.

Flannel, jeans and beards—the lot of them.

The new guy stands and brandishes the broken bottle at the other three…threateningly.

Dom stands.

I look at Nick, “Stay with the girls.”It’s his sister and Lara, he’ll protect them with his life.
