It makes me chuckle and suddenly I don’t feel so bad. The wound is halfway down my thigh, so I wouldn’t be flashing my cock to anybody.

She cuts the length of my leg till the cloth she’s wrapped, takes it off and finishes cutting till my whole right leg is exposed and my pants are completely destroyed—they were my favorite pair.

I’ve had theseLevi’sfor fifteen years.

She has a look of intense concentration while she examines the wound.

I ask, “How’s it looking?”

“You’re very lucky,” she says sounding mildly impressed, “it went straight through. No musculature, no artery, just the fleshy bit. The equivalent of a bee sting.”

“Good, I wasn’t in the mood for anything dramatic.”

She starts cleaning the wound, “I take it you’ve been shot before?”

“A few times,” I say. “I was in Operation Enduring Freedom in the early 2000’s. So, I was shooting people and getting shot at before you were a toddler.”

She smiles, “Impressive.”

Lara and Cassidy seem to have some kind of telepathy because she’s handing Lara the correct things without having to be asked.

“You’re looking quite at home there,” I tell her.

Cassidy smiles, “Lara and I have been talking about me going to nursing school.”

Lara makes short work of cleaning, stitching and bandaging me.

Just as she’s finishing up, there’s a knock on the door. She answers, “Yes?”

Chase’s voice comes through, “Sheriff’s here to see Dom.”

“We done?”

When Lara nods, I call out to Chase, “Send him in.”

Lara takes Cassidy to the door when Chase opens it and says, “We’ll give you guys a minute.”

The Sheriff steps in and I greet him, “Paul.”

“Dom,” he tips his hat. “Just wanted to check in on you. Looks pretty open and shut out there with a room full of witnesses and all.”

“The body?”

“Coroner’s bus loaded him up. Anything you want to add to the story?”

“Aside from the fact that it shouldn’t have happened? No. Who was that poor bastard anyway?”

“Wallet biopsy says Bob Schrader. Looks like a trucker out of Wyoming.”

I nod. There’s nothing left to say. The man is dead.

Paul sighs and pats me on the shoulder, “Well, you rest up. We’ll see about next of kin and what not.”

“Thanks, Paul.”

When he steps out, Lara steps back in. “Let’s get you to bed. I need you immobile for at least twelve hours to start you healing.”

“Yes, ma’am.” I sit up and allow Lara to help me to my room. When we get there, I pull off my top layers of clothing and lie down on the bed.
