My phone buzzes and I wince.
Steeling myself for what's coming, I accept the call, knowing better than to think the elderly woman smiling brightly from her photo on the screen is going to be sweetly asking if everything is all right in town.
Everyone on the Ridge knows who my grandmother is and the torrent of curse words punctuating the Spanish coming through the speaker of my phone is just a small reminder of how Marcia Diaz got her reputation.
There is no getting out of this now. My grandmother is still muttering when I end the call after promising that we'll stop by the house so everyone can meet myfiancée.
"I didn't know your grandmother spoke Spanish," Sparrows says once I've ended the call.
"Only when she's mad," I tell her.
"We're going to have to stop by my grandparents' place on the way up to the cabin," I tell Sparrow, not quite able to bring myself to meet her eyes. "I'm sorry I got you into this, but we can set the record straight about us when this is over."
Once I get her boss to send someone down to take over the rest of her shift, I walk with her back to the little studio she's been staying in at the lodge.
My grandmother's not the only one who wants to know why I hadn't mentioned being engaged-- or even dating. I've got messages coming in from all over the mountain. Hell, I didn't even know this many people had my phone number.
I kill the sound on my phone and slide it into my pocket.
Sparrow's foot slides out from under her on the icy asphalt and I catch her before she can hit the ground.
My words get stolen by Sparrow's sweet lips as they seal against mine.
I'm so fucking shocked; I don't even know what to do. I just stand there, still leaning down at her level, with my thoughts about getting her some decent fucking snow boots still whirling around in my head while her arms wrap around my neck and pull me against all those succulent curves like she fucking owns me.
It takes entirely too long to come to my senses and I'm sure I'm going to regret losing out on those precious seconds I could have been yielding to this beauty's kiss but I'm not about to waste any more of this opportunity.

That makes sense. If we were a real couple, it'd stand to reason we might share a kiss or two. I guess she was just putting on a show, trying to convince this creep he came three thousand miles for nothing.
