She snorts. “You’re gonna think I’m crazy. But I swear it’s legit, and it’s not as awkward as you’d think.”

I resist the urge to roll my eyes. “What is it?”

She purses her lips. “I work for a gentlemen’s club. A real fancy one. I’m a waitress. Only … I waitress topless.”

I sit in silence for a long moment until finally, a laugh bursts out of me. “You’re kidding.”

Courtney chuckles. “I’m not. And the pay is crazy. The payandthe tips. Liv, you might be able to pay off your dad’s medical debt in just a few weeks of doing this.”

I stare at her incredulously. Both because she’s actually doing this for a job and that she’s suggesting I do it too. “Courtney, I can’t walk aroundtoplessfor money.”

She gives me a dismissive wave. “It sounds much sleazier than it is. I mean, obviously guys are leering at you, but they can’t touch, and security is super tight there. It’s weird at first, but you get used to it real quick.”

I laugh. “I can’t believe this is your job.”

Courtney grins.

“How long have you been doing this?”

She shrugs. “On and off for a month or two. I swear, it’s great money. Consider it.”

I shake my head. “I don’t know, Courtney. I’m not … adventurous like that.”

She snorts. “Well, let me know if you change your mind. They’re low on waitresses, and I could definitely get you in.”

I chuckle, taking a sip of wine. As per usual, Courtney is as entertaining as ever. Of course she’d be the one with the shocking job making tons of cash. And while I admire her courage, I’m just too much of a chicken to ever attempt such a thing.

Chapter 6

I’m nearing the end of my first week as Asher King’s new personal assistant, and let’s just say it hasn’t been a walk in the park. I don’t know what I was expecting.

For my new boss to be as nice and reasonable as my old one?

For the workload to feel similar and achievable?

For my boss tonotbe the man I slept with the night before starting my job?

It’s not like Asher has gone out of his way to make my life a living hell. At least, I don’t think so. He’s just … cold. And short. And tense.

Ben assures me things will get better, that Asher and I are just getting used to each other, and that Asher’s cold persona is not personal but simply a trait that comes with the job of being CEO to a billion-dollar company.

I’m not so sure.

Halfway through the workday, Ben looks up at me from across our desks, his expression alarmed. “Uh, Olivia?” he says slowly. “Did you have Asher’s meeting with the Kincaid Group on the schedule for today?”

I frown, pulling up Asher’s calendar. “Yeah, at …” Fuck. “2 a.m.,” I say slowly. “Shit.” I glance to Ben desperately.

“It’s okay,” he says quickly, getting up from his desk.

“I’m so sorry. Oh my god,” I say to his retreating form as he bolts across the office.

I bite my lip, watching him go. God damnit. How could I have messed up this badly? In my first week too? A meeting that was obviously supposed to be scheduled at two o’clockduring normal business hours. Not in the middle of the fucking night. I must not have been paying close enough attention and somehow plugged it in for the wrong two o’clock.

I resist the urge to bury my head in my hands, aware of others around me who might notice. But I’m dreading what’s to come. I’m sure Asher will be angry. At the very least, it won’t help our already tense relationship.

After about ten minutes, Ben comes back, looking stressed, and takes a seat at his desk.

I shoot him a worried, questioning glance.
