When I glance down at my hand, I still can’t believe the ring that sits on my finger now makes me Mrs. Donovan. A smile dances on my lips as I make my way toward the water’s edge.

It’s so beautiful out here, the tranquility offering a relaxing few days. Belize was certainly a good choice for our honeymoon. When I reach the shore, I stop and watch as Rome saunters out of the water, droplets trickling down his chiseled abs, and I can’t help but lick my lips.

My husband.

It’s still strange thinking it, let alone saying it. He comes right up to me and grabs me, lifting me in the air, causing a squeal to fall from my lips.

“Put me down!” My squeal is loud, but all he does his chuckle. He sets me on my feet before he shakes his head like a dog, splashing cold droplets all over me. “I’m going to get you back for that,” I warn him.

“And I can’t wait for that,” he says with a mischievous wink.

“Can we talk and walk?” I gesture to the practically empty beach, but Rome’s dark gaze narrows when he looks at me. “It’s nothing bad,” I tell him. “I promise.”

He laces his fingers with mine as we take a slow stroll down the sand, warmth still keeping my feet snug as we make our way toward the cabin.

We rented our own place for the week, and I’m enjoying not having anything to do but eat, rest, and spend time with my husband. He squeezes my hand, drawing my attention back to the here and now.

“There’s something I need to tell you.” My voice is so quiet, but I know he heard me. We stop, just as the last arch of the sun disappears, and we’re drenched in a dark pink and purple bubble. “I didn’t want to say anything until I was sure, and I got a call when you went swimming.”

“What’s wrong, sweetheart?” Rome’s expression is filled with concern.

“Before we left, I went to the doctor. You know, the usual checkup before our trip.” I’m stalling, dragging it out for as long as I can because the moment I say it out loud, it’s going to be real. But let’s be honest, in a few months, it’s definitely going to get real.

“Elisabet, you’re worrying me. What the hell is wrong?” This time, Rome has both my hands, holding them to his chest. His dark eyes bore into me.

“You’re going to be a father,” I blurt out quickly, as my stomach tumbles wildly at the words. “I mean, I’m pregnant.”

At first, he doesn’t say a word. He stands there looking at me as if I had just uttered something in another language. His mouth opens, closes, his hands tightening around mine, and he steps closer to me.

Rome dips his head before he responds. “I fucking love you so much.” My throat is thick with emotion, and the tears that I’ve been trying to keep at bay fill my eyes.

His arms wrap around me and his body that’s now warmed up engulfs me. I lay my head on his chest as I listen to his racing heartbeat play a melody against my ear. A smile curls my lips, and I breathe deeply, inhaling his scent along with the ocean smell that calms me.

“I love you, Elisabet, and I can’t wait to meet our baby,” he tells me, then pulls away so he can crash his mouth to mine. His tongue dips into my mouth, and we duel it out for dominance, but as always, Rome wins because my whimpers are the only thing I can muster.

His hands trail down my body. Cupping my ass, he pulls me against him as he deepens the kiss. Our lips mold to each other as I enjoy his taste. I don’t know how long we stand there making out, but when he finally breaks the kiss, and I open my eyes, we’re in darkness.

“I love you, Rome.”

“And not for one night only,” he teases as he leads me to our cabin.

Epilogue

Rome

Two years later

The sound of pitter-patter wakes me from a deep sleep. It doesn’t take long for the squealing to start and the mattress to bounce with two bodies that leap onto it in excitement. Most of my life, I spent my birthday with Dom and women who meant nothing more than a fun night. But this will be the second birthday I’m spending with two beautiful girls and a woman who makes me feel like a goddamned king.

I keep my eyes closed, but there’s a smile on my face when I feel small hands at my chin. Another set of hands tug on my arm, and soon enough, I can no longer hide the fact that I’m awake.

“Daddy,” a small voice mumbles in my ear.
