I help her to her feet, and she’s laughing through her tears.

“What are you doing here?”

“Well, I didn’t fly here on a private jet, but Adrian was nice enough to fly Skittles and I out,” Savannah says. “Don’t let me interrupt your nice moment. We just couldn’t hear you from over there.”

Danielle cups her hands over her mouth. “I said yes.”

Savannah and Brian let out a whoop.

I take Danielle into my arms, dip her back, and kiss her thoroughly. We are both breathless when we come up for air, and the rest of the wait staff comes out, clapping steadily as they do.

Danielle is tucked into my side, a dazed look on her face. She pulls Savannah in for a hug.

Later, when the two of us are in my room, Danielle perches on the edge of the bed and pats the spot next to her. I pause to kick my shoes off and sit down. “Why do you look so serious?”

“There’s something I need to tell you, and I don’t know where to begin.”

“You’re not still married, are you?”

Danielle blows out a breath and twists, so she’s facing me directly. “No, I’m not still married. I’ve been trying to figure out how to tell you this… I thought we had more time.”

I take both of her hands in mine and frown. “Okay, you’re scaring me a little bit. Are you okay?”

“I’m okay—we’re okay.”

I kiss her. “Good.”

Danielle shakes her head and drapes a hand over her stomach. “No, I mean we’re okay or at least I hope we are. I’m not sure yet.”

I look down at her stomach and back up at her face. “You—we… What?”

“I missed my period,” Danielle explains, the words pouring out of her in a rush. “I realized after I got back, and I was going to get a pregnancy test, but I was too depressed and miserable. Then you showed up and everything else was a whirlwind, and here we are.”

I search her face. “So, you don’t know yet?”

Holy shit.

Am I going to be a dad?

Danielle withdraws her hands and stands up. She begins to pace. “No, I have no idea. I could be wrong by the way. But Savannah brought a few pregnancy tests with her because she knew I’d want to know. I know this wasn’t part of the plan. And I’m sorry if you feel like I tricked you.”

I stand up and cross over to Danielle. “Why didn’t you tell me sooner? Danielle, you don’t have to face these things alone. Not anymore.”

She lifts her eyes up to my face. “So, you’re not mad?”

I wrap my arms around her waist. “Why would I be? Whatever happens next, we’re going to face it together. A baby is a blessing.”

Chapter Twenty-Eight: Danielle

I set the laptop down on the dresser and spin around to face Adrian. He’s been on the patio for the past hour, looking out at the mountains in the distance, a mug of coffee in his hand.

Not wanting to disturb him, I’ve showered, changed out of my clothes, and gone over some of the notes for my article.

But I can’t help but want to push it all away.

It’s not a can of worms I want to open back up. Especially now that Adrian and I are finally on the same page.

Given everything we’ve had to go through to get here, I’m more than a little reluctant to risk it all, and for an article, no less.
