Adrian laughs. "Nyla is here. Now let's welcome Diana now."

Then Adrian releases my hand and bends down to kiss my forehead. He tilts my head back and gives me a kiss on the lips, leaving me even more light-headed.

I link my fingers over his neck and sigh, allowing the smell of him to wash over me. When Adrian pulls back, he brings his forehead to rest against mine.

I’m trying not to breathe too loudly as I listen for my baby.

She is fussing and whimpering while the nurse, who is standing on the other side of the room, cleans and examines her.

Adrian shifts away and wanders over to the baby to check on her.

I see him peer down at her, and my heart swells to twice its size. Doctor Pierce’s voice pierces through the fog, and I find myself looking back at her.

Doctor Pierce pats the knee closest to her. “Are you ready to push again?”

I suck in my breath. “No, but I don’t have a choice, do I?”

Doctor Pierce pats my knee again. “You’ve got this, Danielle. Take a deep breath and remember to keep taking them.”

Adrian returns to my side and fluffs up the pillows. After propping them up on either side of me, he takes my hand in his. “Here we go. You can do this, babe.”

I square my shoulders and tilt my head back to look up at the ceiling. “Okay.”

“One, two, three and push.”

I use whatever energy I have left to do as the doctor says. When I’m done, I push again and again, and the last of my energy is seeping away, leaving me dizzy and light-headed.

Adrian drifts in and out of my field of vision, but he’s still by my side and refusing to let go of my hand no matter how hard I squeeze.

It feels like I’m going to break his bones, but he doesn’t falter.

I focus on him until I can’t focus on anything.

Then I switch my gaze to Doctor Pierce, who is alert and eager.

She offers one encouraging word after the next, the smile never leaving her face. Another baby’s scream fills the air.

Doctor Pierce emerges with a bundle in her arms and looks up at us. She lowers her mask, and there’s a furrow between her brows.

“You’re never going to believe this.”

Adrian drops my hand and takes a step in the doctor’s direction. “What is it? What’s wrong?”

My arms are shaking as I try to sit up. “What happened? What’s wrong with my baby?”

“There’s nothing wrong with your baby. Diana is a boy,” she says with a big smile on her face.

I frown. “Oh! I thought we were having identical twins. How is this possible?”

Doctor Pierce hands the second bundle over to the nearest nurse, the one with wisps of blonde hair peeking out from under the cap.

She puts the second baby on my chest for a second before taking him away.

“It’s not unheard of. Sometimes these things happen,” Dr. Pierce confirms.

Adrian looks back at me, a dazed expression on his face. “We have a boy and a girl.”

I nod and sink back against the bed. “It’s unbelievable, isn’t it? I wasn't expecting that at all.”
