Still, whether I like it or not, Brian has to come first. At least until he finds his footing.

And as kind and understanding as Danielle is, I doubt this is something we can see eye to eye on. Unfortunately, the more I think about it, the more I realize how unfair I’m being to her.

To us.

Am I even giving us an actual fighting chance, by keeping her a secret?

I have a feeling that's one of the reasons she's mad at me. She probably wants to openly announce that we are dating, but I can't right now. Not with Brian here and in the condition he’s in.

Or am I just biding my time until she leaves. Hoping it will be easier when she’s no longer a paying customer?

We both know that you’re going to let her go back to the city. And that you’ll let the connection fizzle out till she’s nothing but a memory. Because that’s what you always do. It’s what you’ll always do when it comes to the women in your life.

Except I don’t want that to be me and Danielle’s fate.

I don’t want her to end up as a mere memory I revisit whenever I’m sad or lonely.

I'm at a point in my life where I yearn for a deep connection, a shared journey with a special woman.

A desire to settle down is pulsing inside me, a slow, steady drumbeat. And she makes my heart dance with excitement whenever our eyes meet.

The prospect of building a life together with her feels like the most natural and fulfilling choice.

“Are you at least going to pretend you’re trying?” Danielle flashes me an annoyed look as she raises her arms and adopts the warrior pose. “You’re supposed to be setting a good example for the others.”

After flashing her a winning smile, I spring easily into the warrior pose.

“I can multi-task.”

I give her a suggestive look,

Danielle rolls her eyes and shakes her head.

My eyes rake over her, from the top of her head to the soles of her feet. “I can think of something else we can do with our time.”

Danielle blushes and pauses to tie her hair up into a high ponytail, showing off her long and slender neck. “You are the worst distraction ever.”

“Or am I the best distraction?”

I lift one arm up and link my fingers together.

“Think about it. I’m forcing you to focus that much harder.”

Danielle shoots me another exasperated look and mimics my position. “That’s not a good thing. I’m supposed to clear my mind and relax.”

I shrug. “It’s not my fault you can’t focus.”

Danielle tilts her head in my direction and lowers her voice. “What do you expect when you show up here and start flirting with me like nothing is wrong?”

I frown and don’t respond.

Danielle scowls. Her face is even redder when she gives me another dirty look. My lips are twitching as we lay down on our mattress and stretch our bodies out. I follow her every move.

I brush my hand against hers, and with a sigh, but Danielle inches away.

In spite of her obvious exasperation, I know it feels right to be like this.

As if we don’t have a care in the world.
