Then he takes my hand in his and leads me back to the main path. He doesn’t release me as we weave in and out of the cabins.

Adrian smiles as we duck in through a backdoor and down a series of hallways.

He stops in front of the door to a room and takes a key out.

The room is sparsely furnished, with a dresser underneath a TV mounted to the wall, a shower cabin in the tile bathroom, and a king-sized bed overlooking the TV.

Adrian motions to the patio, and we step outside. Underneath a blanket of stars, I curl up to Adrian on the blanket he spreads out.

He has one arm around me, and the other is tracing idle patterns on my arm. “You’re not wasting any time, Danielle.”

My breath hitches in my throat.

“I’ve been holding back because I didn’t want to scare you off,” Adrian continues, without looking at me. “I’m falling in love with you, Danielle. I’ve never felt this way about anyone before.”

I lean back to look at him, my heart racing away inside of my chest. “Adrian, please don’t tell me that if you don’t mean it.” Can we even be? With so much unknown between us?

He turns so that he’s facing me completely. Then he takes both of my hands in his and looks into my eyes. “I mean it. I’ve meant every word, every look, and every moment between us. I know things are complicated. And there are things I have to deal with that have nothing to do with you. Someday, I want to tell you about them, but I— I don’t want you to leave, Danielle.”

Tears prick the back of my eyes and emotion swells in my chest. “I’m falling in love with you too.”

Adrian brushes his thumb across my jaw. “Stay with me tonight.”

I glance between the bed and his face, and I nod, slowly. “Okay.”

When I start to fall asleep, Adrian stands up and dusts off his pants. Then he bends down to sweep me into his arms, carrying me into his room.

My head is resting against his chest, over the steady thrum of his heart, and it’s the best thing I’ve ever heard.

I want to stay in his arms forever. I forget about everything he's done wrong and all the pain he has caused me so far.

I'm sure there are explanations for all of it and I will find out everything when the time is right.

All too soon, Adrian pauses to draw the covers back. Slowly, he sets me down on the mattress, pausing to slip my shoes off. They fall to the floor with a clatter, and he pulls the cover up to my chin.

My hand darts out and closes around his wrist. Adrian glances at my hand, then at my face, a smile hovering on the edge of his lips.

With a sigh, he kicks his shoes off and pulls his shirt up over his head.

My mouth is moist when he climbs into bed next to me, and I curl into his side.

He drapes an arm over my shoulders and presses a kiss to the side of my head. “I wish I could stay here forever with you.”

I squeeze my eyes shut and throw my leg over him. “Me too.”

His hand moves from my hair, down the length of my back. His touch is sure and smooth against my flushed skin.

Goosebumps break out across my flesh as I bring my head to rest against the crook of his neck.

When I press a kiss to the base of his neck, Adrian makes a low noise in the back of his throat. His grip tightens, and his breath hitches.

With a sigh, I flip onto my side, so my back is pressed against his stomach.

He buries his face in my hair, and I listen for his even breathing.

In the morning, the sound of a phone drags me back to reality. With a groan, I pry one eye open and then the other, trying to think of how to escape the blinding white sunlight in the room.

I squeeze my eyes shut and take a few deep breaths.
