I shriek and am about to move away when Adrian wraps his arms around my waist. In one quick move, he hoists me up over his shoulders.

“Put me down,” I say, in between peals of laughter. “Come on. I’ve got makeup on, and I can’t get my hair wet.”

“You didn’t say the magic word,” Adrian teases.

“Come on, you know that isn’t how things work in life,” I counter.

Adrian’s expression turns mischievous. “No, that’s the wrong answer.”

With that, he lifts me up and tosses me into the pool. I sink into the water.

Sputtering and gasping, I kick my way to the surface and scowl. Then I shove my hair out of my face and give Adrian an angry look. He is clutching his sides and laughing.

“You’re going to pay for that,” I warn, pausing to splash some water in his direction. “When you least expect it, that’s when I’ll strike.”

Adrian is still laughing. “Yeah, sure. I’m so scared.”

“You should be.” I stand up straighter and puff my chest out. “You won’t see me coming.”

In the background, Adrian’s phone rings. He exhales and lifts himself out of the pool.

I am admiring the smooth muscles of his back, and the generous view of his behind. He bends over to retrieve his phone from the lounger.

He spins around, presses it to his ear, and my breath hitches in my throat.

Drenched in water, his swimming trunks hanging dangerously low off of his hips, he is easily the most attractive man I’ve ever seen.

And I still can’t believe he’s with me of all people.

You’ve been too hard on him, D. He’s just a hard-working man with a lot of stress and pressure.

I lick my lips and stretch my arms up. I’m floating on my back and staring up at the blue skies when I hear a low whistle.

Slowly, I lift my head up and see Adrian kneeling by the edge of the pool, an apologetic expression on his face. Sighing, I wade closer to him and lean against the edge.

“Duty calls?”

Adrian lowers his head to give me a sweet kiss. “Unfortunately. Lunch in my room later? I’ll send you a note with the time.”

My heart misses yet another beat. “I’d love to.”

Adrian’s eyes travel down and linger on my lips. “You have no idea how much I want to stay right now.”

My hands move behind my back, and I untie the straps of my bikini top, allowing my breasts to spill forward. “It is a shame.”

Adrian makes a low noise in the back of his throat. Abruptly, he leans forward and pulls me out of the water, crushing me to him.

He gives me another searing kiss that makes my head spin. But before I can deepen it, he wrenches his lips away and takes a few steps back. Then he gives my ass a firm slap and walks off.

I am still smiling when I snatch up my bikini top, exit the pool, and pad over to the chaise lounge.

Later, smiling and humming to myself, I head back toward the main pool. Inches away from the clearing, I hear laughter and happy voices coming from all directions. Everybody here sure is happy.

When I step out onto the path, I'm startled to see Adrian in the jacuzzi, again with the baseball sunglasses, ducking behind a row of chairs.

What is he doing?

My heart drops. Not again.
