I leaned back.

“I don’t. We’ve been getting to know each other with the series of interviews.” I watched him flip my answer over in his mind.

“No, she didn’t. Just a dating app thing, but she promised to give me details later.”

I took a loud sip of my coffee. “Oh,” I said as Allan gave me a strange look. I pretended not to notice.

Chapter Nine

Elizabeth

Iwoke up to the sound of Teddy, my mischievous Persian blue-tabby, leaping onto my bed.

His playful antics were my daily wake-up call. His fluffy tail brushed against my face as he pounced on an imaginary prey, a smile tugging at my lips.

Stretching, I threw back the covers and rose from my bed.

After greeting Teddy with a scratch behind his ears, I shuffled to the bathroom to brush my teeth.

With minty-fresh breath, I unrolled my yoga mat and began a series of gentle stretches and poses.

The soft morning light filtered through the curtains as I flowed through the motions. Each stretch brought a sense of calm, and I focused on my breath, grounding myself for the day ahead.

Even with my eyes closed, Alexander’s face kept showing up, so I shook my head.

After light yoga, I wore my favorite blue robe over my pajamas and headed to the kitchen.

Teddy trailed behind me, his tail swishing in anticipation of breakfast. I opened a can of his favorite wet food, and he purred with delight, circling my feet as I served him.

"There you go, Teddy, breakfast is served," I said with a chuckle.

As Teddy devoured his meal, I prepared mine. I toasted a couple of slices of whole-grain bread, scrambled some eggs, and brewed a strong cup of coffee.

The aroma of freshly brewed coffee filled the kitchen, awakening my senses.

I settled at the table with my plate of toast, eggs, and coffee. Teddy, now content, leaped onto the chair next to me, his emerald eyes fixated on my plate.

As I savored my first sip, a sudden knock on the door interrupted my peaceful breakfast.

Teddy's ears perked up, and he darted to the door. I exchanged a puzzled glance with my feline companion and headed to the door.

I opened the door and was surprised to find David, Alexander's driver, standing there with a reassuring smile. I glanced at my watch, panic still gnawing at me.

"Oh, David, I'm so sorry," I stammered, my cheeks flushing with embarrassment.

David chuckled, his warm brown eyes filled with understanding.

"No worries, Ms. Parker. I'm the one who's early today. Mr. Hartman asked me to pick you up a bit earlier.”

My heart skipped a beat at the mention of Alexander, but I offered David a grateful smile.

"Thank you, David. Please, come in.”

I led him into the cozy kitchen, where my breakfast sat untouched.

"I was just about to have breakfast. Would you like something to eat?" I asked, already reaching for a plate.

David hesitated, his polite nature evident, but I insisted.
