"Elizabeth, it's Alexander," I replied, trying to sound casual but failing miserably.

I knew she'd saved my contact information, but it was all I could come up with to start the conversation.

"Oh, hi, Alexander. What's up?" She sounded surprised by my call. And slightly tired.

I cleared my throat, nervousness threatening to overtake me. “Did I wake you?”

“No,” she answered quickly.

"Listen, are you busy tonight?”

She hesitated for a moment.

"No, not really. Why?”

A sense of relief washed over me.

"Good. I have a little surprise for you. Can you get dressed and ready? David will be waiting for you."

Silence hung in the air momentarily before she responded, her curiosity getting the better of her.

"A surprise? I'll get ready. But what's this all about, Alexander?”

I chuckled, not wanting to give away too much.

"You'll find out soon enough, Elizabeth. Just trust me on this one.”

It was about 40 minutes later, and I received a call from David.

"Mr. Hartman, I'm en route to your private hangar. We will be there in 20 minutes.”

As the call ended, my phone buzzed again, and I saw a text from Elizabeth. She wasted no time getting straight to the point.

Elizabeth Parker

What's going on, Alexander? What's the surprise?

I laughed at her impatience and replied,

Just wait and find out

Before Elizabeth could respond, I dialed my second pilot's number.

"Hello, sir," Michael answered.

"Michael," I said with a grin, "I'm sending some guests your way. I’d like you to fly them to the hangar in Anaheim, California. They should be arriving in about 20 minutes. Can you be ready for takeoff?”

There was a pause on the other end of the line and Michael's voice. "Yes, sir, not a problem.”

"Good man," I replied. "Just ensure everything is prepped and ready to go. And there is no discussion of where you are flying them to. This is a surprise. I appreicate your understanding in this matter.”

"Understood, sir," Michael said, his tone professional. "I'll have the jet fueled and ready for departure, and nothing will be revealed."

Seven hours after I initiated the impromptu adventure to California, I was starting to become impatient. Then I got David’s call. His voice crackled through the phone, and I could hear the excitement in his tone.

"Mr. Hartman," he said. "We're in the car and heading to our final destination.”

I appreciated his secrecy since Elizabeth didn’t know what I'd planned.
