As we continued to walk around the golf course, I couldn't help but reflect on the journey that had led me to Elizabeth. It’d been a winding path, filled with ups and downs and marked by fleeting romances.

But something had changed.

I’d changed.

She'd awakened something in me, something I never realized was missing.

Something that I needed in my life.

Jon's question had been valid, a reminder of my past tendencies, but it also pushed me to confront my feelings.

I was no longer content with the thrill of short-lived affairs and casual flings. I craved something deeper, something meaningful, and I may find it with Elizabeth.

The weight of my past romantic misadventures hung heavily on my shoulders as Jon and I walked. I couldn't help but feel cursed that I’d consistently gotten involved in romances that burned bright and fast, only to fizzle out even quicker.

It's a pattern I’d fallen into more times than I cared to admit, leaving me with a lingering regret. I avoided relationships like the plague.

Jon, ever the voice of reason and concern, didn't let the matter rest.

"You know, Alex," he said, his voice gentle but probing. ”You've been down this road before. Are you sure you won't let this relationship with Elizabeth end quickly like all the others?"

I sighed, feeling the weight of Jon's words like a leaden cloud overhead.

"I'm determined not to," I replied with conviction. "I can't let this one slip away."

Jon studied me intently, his gaze unwavering.

"You said you like her. What makes you so sure it’s not just physical attraction and the excitement of a new romance?"

I paused for a moment, reflecting on the question. Jon had a way of cutting through my defenses and getting to the heart of the matter.

"I do like her," I admitted, my voice tinged with vulnerability. "The physical attraction is there. She’s incredibly beautiful. But I also genuinely enjoy spending time with her. And there's something more I can't quite put into words. I want to slow down with Elizabeth and see where it goes."

Jon nodded in understanding, his expression softening.

"That's a good start, Alex. Just remember to be honest with yourself and her along the way."

As we approached the next tee box, Jon's curiosity got the best of him.

"Have you told your brother about your relationship with Elizabeth yet?"

I hesitated, my grip on the golf club tightening as I contemplated Jon's question. The truth was, I hadn't told my brother about Liz, not yet anyway.

My relationship with Allan had never been complicated, but I wasn't sure how he’d react to the news.

Elizabeth was his best friend. I hoped he wouldn’t think I’d ever hurt her, but he knew that she and I'd never made an effort to get along in the past.

He could potentially react in too many ways. I didn’t feel comfortable telling him yet.

Instead of answering Jon's question, I swung at the golf ball, sending it soaring down the fairway. The ball landed with a satisfying thud, but the weight of how Allan would react when he eventually found out lingered in the air.

Jon didn't press the issue any further, sensing that it was a topic I wasn't ready to discuss. We continued our game in silence, the unspoken tension between us palpable.

Despite keeping the news from Allan, I couldn't help but feel a sense of hope and determination.

This time, I was determined to break free from the patterns of my past to give this budding romance with Elizabeth a chance to grow and flourish.

As we neared the end of our round, the day had been filled with reflection, honesty, and the unwavering support of a true friend.
