It wasn't the answer, but I knew it would trail him off.

Alexander chimed in.

"Elizabeth has been enlightening me with her art knowledge. She's quite impressive."

I felt a warm blush creeping up my cheeks as Allan observed us with an amused twinkle in his eyes. The waiter arrived with his tray.

"I ordered coffee and croissants for us. I hope you two don't mind." Allan stated.

I didn't mind and gratefully accepted the breakfast. I was utterly starving.

"You two make quite the pair," Allan remarked out of nowhere.

My eyes widened in surprise at his comment, and I glanced at Alexander. He, however, seemed unfazed by it.

He responded in his typical confident manner, "Of course we do. Don't we, Elizabeth?"

I was surprised by Allan’s comment, but I couldn't help but laugh.

"Alexander, stop teasing," I playfully scolded, giving Allan a gentle nudge. "You're imagining things, Allan."

Allan stepped back, still studying us with an appraising gaze.

"Well, maybe not yet, but you two would look good together as a couple."

I could feel my heart racing as my eyes darted between Alexander and Allan. I had yet to anticipate this turn of events. Allan’s easygoing demeanor had always made our friendship comfortable, but now, it felt like we were treading on unfamiliar territory.

To diffuse the situation, I tried to keep things light.

"Allan, you're incorrigible," I said, playfully rolling my eyes.

Alexander laughed, giving Allan a friendly pat on the back.

"You're just trying to play matchmaker, aren't you?"

Allan grinned mischievously.

"Guilty as charged."

I couldn't help but glance at Alexander again, and our eyes locked briefly.

"Maybe someday," Alexander said with a wink, leaving room for interpretation.

I couldn't contain my surprise any longer.

"Alexander, what are you saying?"

He grinned, his confidence unwavering.

"I'm saying that maybe Allan isn't entirely wrong."

Alexander checked his watch and mentioned he had to go to the office, leaving the restaurant and me behind.

A pang of disappointment crept over me; I wished he’d stay a little longer, but I couldn't reveal the depth of my feelings.

Allan, always the friendly host, voiced his surprise, saying, "Oh, you're leaving so soon?"

Alexander nodded, his expression carrying a hint of sadness.
