Okay, that wasn’t what gave me away. He looks unimpressed that something has slipped past the surveillance he had set up.

I’m rather proud of myself. My idea to send the card to Rhia’s grandmother worked, and I could get a message to her without him realizing.

“Did you follow Rhia here? She said she took several precautions and didn’t spot anyone following her.” I deflect, avoiding having to answer his question.

“We didn’t need visuals on her. When she was at the airport and bound for London, one of my men dropped a tracker into her bag. When she changed her plans, we only knew who she was because of her signal.”

“And it led you straight here.” I finish for him.

“It did.”

Crap. After everything Rhia did to fly under Tiero’s radar, it was something so simple as a tracker.

She’ll be furious when I tell her.

Oh. My. God.

Rhia.

In the midst of my panic and excitement of having Tiero here, I’ve forgotten about my best friend and the man I’ve spent the past few weeks with and grown so close to.

“Where are Rhia and Aiden?” I ask, jumping up from the bed.

Tiero stands too, growling. Is that because I mentioned my friends?

“Princess, you need to rest. You fainted,” he says, ignoring my question, trying to pull me back onto the bed.

That’s more like the Gualtiero of old. I sidestep him.

I won’t let him domineer this situation any more than he already is. Perhaps I should hope for him to show me more of his Don-side. It would make it easier to stay strong against our chemistry that’s still very much alive.

Kissing Aiden today hasn’t even put a dent in it. Wow, did that only happen today?

“Answer my question, Tiero. What have you done to my friends?” I ask, firmer. “Where are they?”

“Calm down. They’re fine. They’re in the other cabin.”

“I want to see them.”

“They’re unharmed,” he assures me.

“I want to see for myself,” I say and then add, “please.”

He sighs and reaches out his hand for me. I ignore it and walk to the front of the cabin. We throw on our coats and when Tiero opens the door, an icy breeze hits my skin, and I shiver.

I pity the goons who have to guard the cabins. They’re hovering around a small fire, trying to stay warm. When they see us emerge, they straighten up.

Unease consumes me as we descend the steps of the lakeside cabin. I didn’t hear a peep from Aiden after I pretended to faint. That’s not like him. He’s a protector through and through. He would have tried to be by my side.

What did they do to him to prevent him from coming to my rescue? My trepidation grows the closer we get to the other cabin. The path glistens in a layer of frost, and I take slow, measured steps so I don’t slip.

Snow won’t be far off. Will I still spend the winter at ‘Mountain Breath’? If so, I have to get back up the mountain as soon as possible. But now that Tiero is here, I can’t imagine not having him in my life again.

Everything is so up in the air. I hate this dreadful uncertainty.

Tiero holds my elbow to steady me on my feet when I skid.

Two guards patrol the cabin in between the trees. This must be where they took Rhia and Aiden. Tiero opens the door and lets me in. He motions to the four men watching over their captives to step outside and leave us alone.
