So much about this guy angers me. Foremost is my own perplexing reaction to him, closely trailed by his closeness with Ella.

Sometimes, I just want to put a bullet through his head, but Ella would not forgive me, and I’m not willing to jeopardize our developing relationship.

So I vow to myself to keep a watchful eye on him. And if I have any say in this, and I do, Ella and Aiden Burg will not be alone together again.

I watched Ella leave his cabin this morning, and she was upset. Whatever they talked about was heavy, naturally raising my curiosity. Lucky for him, we all were distracted by Ella’s fall.

Had she lost the baby because of it, there’s no doubt in my mind I would have made him suffer.

He can thank his lucky stars that it didn’t come to that. Other than a broken arm, and a bruised back, Ella is fine. And having just seen our baby has put me in a good mood. So I let my issue with Burg from this morning slide.

Ending the stare-off with Burg that’s souring my mood, I pull out my phone and send the ultrasound pictures to Mateo. He stayed in Sicily, taking care of business.

Me: Meet your nephew.

I stare at the pictures I just sent, joy spreading through me anew. Of course, I’ve seen pictures like these before, but when it’s your own child, the emotion is entirely different.

I’m going to be a father!

I wish mama and papa were here to share in this happy moment. God knows they’re rare in my world.

I need to decide on my next steps. Ella doesn’t want to return to Sicily, but we need to. I have responsibilities I can’t shed for long, and the resources for planning my exit are there too.

My phone pings with an incoming message.

Mateo: Congratulations, bro. I’m happy for you. I knew it would all work out.

Mateo: How can you tell from this picture it’s a boy? Isn’t it a bit early?

Me: Ella and her psychic friend are convinced it’s a girl. But you know us De Marcos…

Mateo: … we always father boys first. LOL one of you is right.

Me: That would be me.

Antonio approaches to update me on the arrangements he’s made for our trip home. As soon as Ella is cleared to fly, we’ll be leaving. But before Antonio has a chance to open his mouth, Dr. Agosti enters, his eyes scanning the room looking for me.

I raise a finger to Antonio and tell him, “Later.”

Meeting Agosti halfway, he tells me, “The blood results are in.”

Chapter Forty-Four

Ella

Wewalkbacktomy room, Tiero’s hand in mine, his warmth reassuring me that I’m not alone in this. Nerves swirl with unease in my stomach. God, what if there’s something wrong with me?

As if reading my mind, Tiero squeezes my hand and says, “Let’s not jump to conclusions. They might yet tell us that everything is fine.”

They might, but why not come straight out with it then? Does Dr. Agosti know?

I look over my shoulder to see him a step behind us, his face neutral. No clues to be found there.

Santino and Roberto follow close behind. After weeks of relative freedom, it’s strange having an escort again everywhere we go. After the multiple attempts to kidnap me and the attack on Tiero’s life when we met, I understand we need protection, but I don’t have to like it.

That reminds me. Turning to Tiero, I ask, “How is Alonso?”

Tiero’s eyebrow raises in surprise. Is that a bad sign? Maybe I shouldn’t have asked. What if the news isn’t good? Would that be a bad omen for my upcoming talk with the doctor?
