“I promise I’ll tell you soon. Please trust me. I’d never deceive you. Your trust is the most precious thing to me.”

I nod, but I can’t say I’m happy. I want answers as to how he thinks he can leave the Mafia alive.

“So you’re happy to return to the island?” he double-checks.

Who wouldn’t be? That place is a piece of paradise.

It seems like the perfect solution. He’s right, only happy memories live there, and Tiero will be close enough to Sicily to fly there when needed.

“Okay,” I easily agree. “But I want to stop in Dublin on the way and in Austria to check in on Oma.”

He doesn’t respond right away and from his facial expression, it’s clear he’s running through the logistics.

“If you don’t have the time, that’s fine. I can always go alone for a week or two. I won’t even object to having bodyguards attached to me.”

Tiero stares at me incredulously. “We’ll not be separated again. I thought I was clear about that,” he says with mock seriousness.

“I guess you’ll be coming to Ireland with me then. There are so many places I want to show you that have a special place in my heart.”

His face softens. “I want to see them all.” And I believe him.

“You’ll get to meet Knox—”

“Your highland bull,” he finishes for me.

“Yes,” I say with a broad smile. “I can’t wait to see him again. I hope he’ll still recognize me.”

“You’re unforgettable, angel.”

I lean over to kiss him. He can be so sweet.

“Apparently so.”

Chapter Forty-Five

Aiden

It’ssometimeaftereleven. The lights are dimmed in the waiting room. Most of De Marco’s men are asleep, getting some shut eye while they can. From what I gather, there’s a two-hourly roster in place for guarding the entrances of the hospital and the wing that Ella and the criminal are staying in.

I’m sitting on the ground, leaning against a wall in a darkened corner. It allows me to see the entire room and watch over Rhia and Claudette who are asleep on mattresses on the floor. I don’t trust these guys. It’s enough I lost one girl—my girl—I’m not risking the others. Plus, Lex would have my balls if anything happened to Rhia.

Honestly, this is the weirdest thing ever. The three of us are having a sleepover with the Italian Mafia. We were cloistered most of the day in this VIP area.

They watch me like a hawk, but Claudette can more or less come and go as she pleases, as long as she has a goon with her. Naturally she’s charmed him. I even saw them play cards together. As a result, she can roam more freely. So I had her help me get a message to Carl, telling him our operation failed and that the company firewall was breached.

Ella stopped by twice, and the girls went to have dinner with her, but I stayed back each time. Having to face her rips out my heart.

Rhia and Claudette hover around me, trying to soothe me, but nothing can do that.

The two of them hit it off right away. No surprise there, they’re quite alike. They were initially concerned about the developments of the last twenty-four hours, but relaxed after seeing Ella so excited when she showed them the ultrasound pictures, and generally looking as content as can be under the circumstances.

They really shouldn’t. Ella is choosing to be with a criminal who will inevitably put her life at risk. How can they be okay with that?

Rhia admitted she wasn’t thrilled but would support whatever would make Ella happiest. But how can that be by the side of a Mafia Don?

When I asked her this, she opened her mouth just like Ella did earlier this morning, and just like her friend, she closed it again, saying nothing.

What are they not telling me? And more importantly why?
