Tiero’s voice cuts through the chaos. “Burg, what is this—”

“The IV’s been tampered with.”

All the blood drains from my body. No idea where it went, but it doesn’t seem to pulsate through me anymore.

Aiden’s words erupt in a frantic torrent. “It’s not an iron solution! I found an unconscious nurse in the supply room with an iron drip knocked over next to her. Someone switched the solution!”

Time seems to freeze as his words register. My gaze flickers to the IV line attached to my arm, my mind racing with terror and disbelief.

Tiero surges to my side, pulling out the IV line in one swift move. I register no pain, too numb and shocked to even wince.

Thunderous fury is prickling the air around him.

“Let go of him,” he orders his men who immediately take a step back.

“You,” he points at Anne. “Page the doctor and get him here.” She nods and fiddles with her pager, her hands shaking so badly she drops it a couple of times.

I’m frozen, watching everything around me as if I’m not a part of it. Unable to process the implications of what Aiden’s saying, I stare at my arm and the spot the IV was attached a few seconds before.

Fear, raw and all-consuming, is rushing through me.

Peanut!

What did they pump into me?

“What were you doing in the supply room?” Tiero’s voice is full of suspicion, and my eyes shoot to him. He’s in Aiden’s face, pushing him against a wall.

Is he accusing Aiden?

But he just saved the day.

I swing my legs out of bed and storm toward them. Trying to step between them doesn’t work, so I pull on Tiero’s arm.

“Let him go. Aiden might have just saved mine and the baby’s life.”

He takes a step back but repeats, “What were you doing in the supply room?”

“I spotted a guy on my way to the cafeteria. The way he was looking around and surveying everything… something was off with him. I followed him but lost him. So I kept searching. The door of the supply room was ajar when I walked past ten minutes later, and I peeked in. A nurse was on the ground, a locker with uniforms open, an iron drip knocked over. It’s not rocket science to put it all together.”

Aiden’s hands gesture with frustration, his words laden with a mixture of anger and concern.

“If the solutions were swapped, what’s in this one?” I ask, pointing at the bag of liquid by the bed.

Fear clenches my chest, an icy grip strangling my throat.

I feel violated.

Something malicious has entered my body, and I have no clue what the effects will be.

Was I poisoned?

Am I going to die from this?

I’m trembling uncontrollably now. Tiero notices, scoops me up and sits me down on the bed, enveloping me in his arms.

“Angel, listen to me,” he whispers into my ear. “I will sort this and make it right.”

What if it’s already too late for that?
