And there is my answer.

I shouldn’t have waged war with Maximo in Chicago. It ruffled a few feathers, but why not come after me?

Because they want to hit you where it hurts most,my mind retorts.

Bastards!

I should have wiped them out at their root. But that was Maximo’s call, and he didn’t want to cause a bloodbath in the streets.

Setting a few examples was enough for him, and I respect that.

But now Ella has a new target on her back.

F.U.C.K.

And just after I wiped out my enemies at home.

I need to get her back to the island. She’s safe there. Only then will I have peace of mind… at least until I can set up our new life.

A knock on the door has me roll my eyes. So much for enjoying my angel and our engagement.

“Find him,” I order Uberto and hang up.

Pulling on my clothes from last night, I walk to the door. Glancing over my shoulder, I make sure Ella is completely covered before opening it.

“Boss,” Antonio greets me. “Burg just had word from his office. They identified the nurse. He’s—”

“A Romero soldier,” I say, interrupting him. “I just got off the phone with Uberto.”

“According to Burg, he’s been spotted on a plane back to Chicago.”

I grind my teeth, irritated that Freemont Security is one step ahead of us. But we got the information, which is all that matters.

“Ring Maximo and tell him to collect him when he lands and to put him on hold for me,” I instruct.

“Why would the Chicago mob be after our baby?” Ella’s voice comes from the bed.

I turn to look at her. She’s sitting up, the blanket pulled up over her shoulders, so only her head is visible.

Antonio wisely doesn’t look her way and keeps his attention on me.

“The Romero family has always been the archenemy of Don De Marco’s family in Chicago,” Antonio explains.

Ella cocks her head to the side, puzzled. “Why would that make me a target? I don’t understand. What am I missing?” she asks.

Bringing my attention back to Antonio, I dismiss him. “Call Maximo. Let me know if there are any problems. And get the cars ready out the front. We’re leaving as soon as Ella gets the all clear.”

Antonio nods, and I close the door.

Walking back to the bed, Ella scowls at me. Time to come clean about what I’ve been up to since she fled Italy.

Chapter Fifty-Two

Ella

Irubmyforeheadin frustration as Claudette passes me a cup of herbal tea. I just told the girls the reason why my iron infusion got swapped and how my relationship with Tiero has yet again made me a target for his enemies… or cousin’s enemies in this case.

Great, just great.
